NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s quest to neutralize a fan’s lawsuit over the infamous “no call” NFC championship game gained an unlikely ally on Wednesday: the New Orleans Saints.

The franchise filed a friend-of-the-court brief arguing that the dispute over the “no call,” which likely cost the Saints a trip to the Super Bowl, should be settled in league boardrooms instead of the courts.

The Saints noted that they have already successfully pushed for a rule change that will allow all offensive and defensive pass interference calls or non-calls to be challenged on the field.

quote:

“While the Saints appreciate the fervor and dedication of their deep and passionate fan-base, allowing such claims to proceed in court would open the door to countless legal claims brought by passionate sports fans that would inundate the courts and overburden sports leagues and their member teams, including the Saints,” team lawyers said.

quote:

The Saints state in their brief that the purpose of NFL rules is to provide “finality” for all teams and warn that more litigation could open the Saints up to post-game lawsuits as well.

Attorney James Gulotta of the Stone Pigman firm writes, “one could imagine without being hyperbolic a scenario after an incident like what occurred during the NFC Championship Game where fans of both teams file parallel suits … Nor is it a slip down an illogical slope to suppose that, in week 16 of the regular season, a fan of another team frustrated by where his or her team ended up in the standings could decide to challenge the result of a Saints victory in week 6 because, if the challenge succeeded, that earlier opponent would qualify for the playoffs instead of the Saints.”

Meanwhile, the team also warned that LeMon’s lawsuit could waste precious time as the Saints prepare for the 2019 season.

“Complying with Plaintiffs’ subpoena will require the Saints to expend considerable time, effort, and resources – time, effort, and resources better spent on pursuing victories during the 2019 season and beyond,” the team says.

I hate to say it but I agree. This is a door that if opened could cause allot of unnecessary crap. Its time to nut up and just whip arse this season and forget, but not forgive about the past.

I was wondering how long it would take the NFL to basically tell the Saints to take care of this stupid shite

You know, I used to enjoy watching recently rookie guys play out in the pre-season for different teams....Now, not so much. I"m still having severe reservations watching the saints in general, due to their being a part of the nfl.

I may just get more into hunting.

I’m sure there’s no pressure from the NFL to do this. Not to mention if it comes out that some tomfoolery went down it could severely hurt the league financially and the saints accordingly. I’m ready to move on but I’m also curious to see if the fix was on.

Anyone aside from the hardcore tard fans could see this lawsuit was a colossal waste of time.

Would you like the Steelers to sue for how the Saints game played out, considering it cost them the playoffs?

I see that the Saints got the message from the NFL that they need to send this out. “Just copy and paste” this.

I'm on record saying this lawsuit is an example of what's wrong with the state's politics and justice system. The judge allowing this farce to proceed is just pandering to the mob and garnering votes. Also, there's a reason why 3/4 of the billboards in Baton Rouge have accident lawyers' faces on them. Louisiana may not have invented the frivolous lawsuit, but they damn sure perfected it.

It's a waste of time and money and it's going nowhere. The only thing it might do is provide a distraction during a critical season for this franchise. Saints are right, here.

Exactly. People don't realize this sets a bad precedent. It's not the Saints were forced by the league to do this, it's because they realize they don't want yahoos suing them over in-game/front-office decisions.

I agree, the lawsuit is a waste.

I just wish the NFL would punish those "all-star" officials from LA.

Fine them or suspend them for a few games or playoffs.

That would give me a little sense of justice

Anyone who thought this lawsuit was a good idea or can’t move on from January is a loser.

While I agree that this lawsuit is ridiculous and embarrassing. I am 100% sure that the NFL strong armed the Saints into doing this. Goodell and his minions going under oath in a court of law could do permanent damage to the leagues image maybe worse.

Oh and if you all thought the officiating was bad last year, just wait until this season gets kicked off. Goodell's bounty gate was nothing compared to what his storm troopers ( game officials ) will do to the Saints this season.

I agree - the lawsuit would have been the cause of a lot worse situations than it would have helped, and what would it have gotten us if the the lawsuit won? nothing substantial.

this year we just need to handle our shite and not be in a position where a play like that means anything.

the coaching "mistake" you're talking about should've given us a 1st down with a chance to run the clock all the way down to about :20 left and forced the Rams to use the remainder of their timeouts AT LEAST

and the 1st down out to MT13 was there and very possibly was going to be a TD if Brees doesn't shorthop the throw... at worst it's another 1st down (plus I believe this was an audible at the line and not what was called in the huddle... so not a coach's call)
