Loomis should get a raise and a lifetime contract. In fact, he should marry Mrs. Benson and inherit the team.

I’ve always felt they drafted well, just let the wrong guys go. They develop players to shine on other teams way too often.

All we need was a decent quarterback after Brees....

Since 2013 there isn't a ton of middle ground. Either the Saints blow the draft out of the water or they suck donkey

That 2007 draft had a real butterfly effect on them winning it all in 2009:
Jermon Bushrod was able to jump in and not miss a beat when Jammal Brown blew his knee out in the 1st preseason game of 2009.
Robert Meachem, though never becoming a real go-to receiver, was huge in 2009. He damn near single-handedly won that Redskins game (INT/strip-fumble from the defender and ran back for a TD) which kept them a game in front of the Vikings to eventually get the 1st seed/home field throughout.
Also, the drafting of Meachem over Greg Olsen forced Payton to eventually trade for Shockey, which injected some swagger, toughness and attitude into an offense that was considered soft/finesse for most of 2006-2008.

My guess is the saints have also made the fewest picks of anyteam over this span.
I wish the saints kept and acquired more picks.

I loved the rare times he was healthy he didn’t get the stats but he absolutely collapsed the pocket so others did

The problem is they don’t keep the great players. Hicks, Ellis, Hendrickson, Baun, Onyamata.
Mickey has been atrocious when it comes to keeping the right guys vs the free agents he has brought in. Or the bums he’s resigned. Thomas, Peat, Ruiz.
#1 at draft, #32 at second contract management.

2017: #1 draft class - 142% above expected (Ryan Ramczyk #6, Alvin Kamara #10, Trey Hendrickson #13, Marcus Williams #17, Marshon Lattimore #29)
This was just filthy and we were so damn close to replacing Lattimore with Mahomes as well
.
5 studs in one draft is impressive.

Sure if we ignore all the great players we did sign to 2nd and even 3rd contracts. No we didn't keep them all, but we kept a bunch.

So, New England had a -1.1 but still managed to go to 7 Super Bowls since 2006.

It was even more than that.
Al-Quadin Muhammad and Anzalone have had long careers starting.
5 guys flirting with All-Pro for multiple years + 2 starters is a GOAT draft.

They also had a defensive genius for a coach with an offensive genius at QB, so they had someone on both sides who could really keep that side up even when the talent dipped.
We had an offensive coach who ran through DCs like toilet paper, and anytime they actually got momentum he'd do something like mandate a cover 3 scheme when the man blitz scheme the year before had you in top 4 defensive scoring and yards, and then bring in someone to run the cover 3 while planning on replacing the DC.
Payton helped bring us a SB, but he also did a LOT of dumb shite when it came to the defensive side of the ball, always trying to chase trends instead of being satisfied when we finally got something working, and drafting defensive players that often neither fit our scheme, nor their draft placement (Stanley Jean-Baptiste in the 2nd to try to be his Sherman being the most glaring, and Payton Turner being the biggest bust).

Jahri being re-ranked to #1 overall 2006 confirms what our eyeballs all saw.
What a freaking monster he was. Legend.

IMO, Hendrickson is the only one that fits that description for possibly being Loomis' fault.
Hicks, Baun & Ellis were all a product of the coaching staff either having them in the wrong positions or not giving them legitimate shots. They then moved on and bet on themselves.
Onyamata was a big loss, but I felt like he priced himself out, so they let him walk. Looked like one of those, they wanted to keep him for the right price, but didn't want to overpay for a 30 year old d-lineman. May be a reason he started every game in Atl, then they let him walk this year.

Overlooking Thomas having an all-time season the year after he signed his new deal?

You can’t argue that we’ve kept more talent than we’ve let go.

About how I figured. Used to be very solid. Awful in more recent years

I mean it looks like our drafts went to shite as soon as Payton left.. Mickey was an absolute train wreck at first.
I like the past two drafts though…

Crazy how that works. Have a really good/great coach in Payton and most of the drafts look great. Have an absolutely shitty coach in DA, and drafts look like shite. Bring in Moore and suddenly we can draft again. It's almost as if the one common denominator may not be the reason for the shitty drafts.

Townedrunkard hasn't posted yet to dispute this either because he's embarrassed or because he had a stroke.
