My guess is the saints have also made the fewest picks of anyteam over this span. I wish the saints kept and acquired more picks.
The Saints had one of the better rosters for a long time. It doesn’t make sense to draft players who can’t even make the team.

So we are suppose to be excited about this stretch, because of great drafts in the past? 2006 is one of the best drafts in franchise history, by 2021 those guys we’re retired.

We do. However this also indicates that we weren’t as bad in the other years as many believe.
You might want to check the 2021-2024 stretch (25,28,30, 20) again. Also note that shitty drafts coincides with Payton leaving. 2025 certainly looks promising especially if Shough continues to develop. But anyone that thinks criticism over that last few years wasn’t warranted is just a blind homer making excuses

Payton was here for the 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 drafts. Awful. Those depleted the team plus the covid cap restrictions limited our ability in FA

Going off the OP the 2019 draft was #2 and 2020 #10, can’t have it both ways.
No one will hit every single draft but 2006 and 2017 are all time drafts for the franchise (81 and 86 are the others) and Payton was a big part of those. The 21-24 drafts were terrible and he left after 21. The point the rah rah fans don’t get is the franchise was in bad shape and trending down, the evidence is clear in not just these draft rankings but the on field outcome. Hopefully they turned the corner with 25-26 but pointing to an arbitrary 20 period does not invalidate the criticism of the last 4-5 years

Maybe the coaches are a much bigger part of the draft process than the GM?
Drafts under Sean Payton:
Drafts under Dennis Allen:
Drafts under Kellen Moore:

Maybe the head coach actually matters.

This list is crap, they have Penning graded as a C and Bresee as a D. Penning during his time with the Saints just didn’t work out at all.

Yes it does invalidate the criticism... You have like 10+ franchises that have done nothing for 10+ years with even better draft picks. If we were behind NYJ, LVR, ARI, MIA, CLE, TEN then sure. If we were the worst/ least promising team in our division then sure.
I don't care if we made a few stupid decisions, teams do that every year. Some of those teams continue to do that for 20 years. Other teams find their franchise QB within 5 years of a SB winning franchise QB leaving.
Packers, Patriots, and Saints won SB's and found their next guy within a few years.

The Saints were bad and trending down from 2021-25, sorry great drafts in 2006 and 2017 do not invalidate that. The compounded a tough cap situation with idiotic signings like Carr.

The goal is to win not say at least we were better than the Jets Raiders and Browns

This is classic strawmaning. No one bats 1.000 at anything. It’s not just a bad decision here or there. 21-25 was a waste due to bad decisions compounded on other bad decisions. It was a waste. If they found the right coach QB and are moving in the right direction that’s obvious what we all want but no amount of lip stick will cover the pig that we’ve seen for 4-5 years while Ra-rahs were making excuses

We had post CSP bad years shocker.
We look to have good drafts the last two years.
Things are looking much better and much sooner.

The number #10 overall draft class and Ruiz was the prize of that class? Lol. Baun had almost no impact on our team before he left.
Hard to take this list seriously when Ruiz headlines a top ten draft…

It really wasn't a deep class at all...
ARI: 58 av, 6 picks = 9.6 av/pick
ATL: 81 av, 6 picks = 13.5
BAL: 218 av, 10 picks = 21.8
BUF: 96 av, 7 picks = 13.7
CAR: 109 av, 7 picks = 15.5
CHI: 110 av, 7 picks = 15.7
CIN: 171 av, 7 picks = 24.4
CLE: 112 av, 7 picks = 16
DAL: 150 av, 7 picks = 21.4
DEN: 93 av, 10 picks = 9.3
DET: 106 av, 9 picks = 11.7
GNB: 118 av, 9 picks = 13.11
HOU: 53 av, 5 picks = 10.6
IND: 149 av, 9 picks = 16.5
JAX: 83 av, 12 picks = 6.9
KAN: 99 av, 6 picks = 16.5
LAC: 102 av, 6 picks = 17
LAR: 65 av, 9 picks = 7.2
LVR: 63 av, 7 picks = 9
MIA: 169 av, 11 picks = 15.36
MIN: 213 av, 15 picks = 14.2
NOR: 79 av, 4 picks = 19.75
NWE: 100 av, 10 picks = 10
NYG: 117 av, 10 picks = 11.7
NYJ: 67 av, 9 picks = 7.4
PHI: 142 av, 10 picks = 14.2
PIT: 89 av, 6 picks = 14.8
SEA: 116 av, 8 picks = 14.5
SFO: 111 av, 5 picks = 22.2
TAM: 124 av, 7 picks = 17.7
TEN: 30 av, 6 picks = 5
WAS: 120 av, 8 picks = 15
Top 10 in terms of AV/pick:
Cincinnati = 24.4
San Francisco = 22.2
Baltimore = 21.8
Dallas = 21.4
New Orleans = 19.75
Tampa Bay = 17.7
Los Angeles Chargers = 17
Kansas City = 16.5
Indianpolis = 16.5
Cleveland = 16
Now, I think we'd trade for Tampa's draft in an absolute heartbeat getting 2 all-pro players in their first 2 and Baun does A LOT of heavy lifting...but we drafted him and these are based on the teams that drafted the players. I don't know exactly how they calculate value based on projected pick or whatever.

The Eagles have been on fire as an organization the last dozen years or so
