Wilson is familiar with the offense,

Yeah I get that but it would be more beneficial to find someone who may be here in 2 years while we are rebuilding. There is no need on this roster for a 30 y/o WR who is mediocre and barely on the depth chart. Especially if he can't do the one things he's paid to do.

Not really. They were both on the edge of getting a roster spot and we kept Wright/ Stalbird who have just as much upside.
I meant more for having on the ps and developing, as opposed to someone expected to play (beyond special teams).

Actually checked and he is more cuttable than I thought. We'd lose a bit of cap this year (roughly a mil) but would gain cap space next year. We have the cap cushion to do so.

I find it interesting that the 2 positions the Saints traded for(OL and WR) are also their claim pickups.

I can see OL out of necessity instead of DL depth but they must not be happy with the WR room outside of Shaheen and Olave.

Tipton would be claimed.

Would he? Idk. Every team has their Tipton, and he could’ve been had in the past.

Could be Wilson though. I could see velus. Doubt it’s cooks. Maybe one of the interior defenders like Bullard

I think so. A very small percentage of players get claimed but I could see him being one. Two productive offseasons in a row.

Not saying we will, but we can take the hit IF we go that route.

We lose money if we cut him this year. If we cut him post June 1st of next year then we get 4mil and 3mil pre June. He will be here until we cut to 53 next year.

I agree with developing young guys > keeping vets that will barely play. Keeping Shepard/ Bullard over Diggs is an interesting one.

It was an IF statement, that he is actually cuttable IF we choose that route. I thought he wouldn't be cuttable at all with his contract, so it was well structured to give us an out this year IF needed.

I agree that it's unlikely. Will likely be Wilson or Tipton (hoping Wilson since the guy we picked up easily replaces his role).

We shouldn't even be happy with Olave unless he plays a full year and proves he can be anywhere close to be considered a #1 or really good #2. The main concern is that we had our top 4-5 WR out with injuries last year so its more about making sure we have a decent 5th and 6th option. I think that concern is what played into the Brandon Cooks deal. I'm really happy with Tipton/ Vele and Cooks as a #5.

Would you rather Palmer over Tipton? Tipton has ample tape against live bullets after a nice preseason last year. Didn’t do much. He’s 5’10” 179, another small guy. Wouldn’t mind keeping but that’s my case against him

Yeah most likely. I'm not saying I love Tipton or anything.

I just think he would have a good chance of being claimed and I think the Saints want to keep him.

Seems like there would be other guys that would go first

I’m not sure if we write Palmer’s name in pen either

None of these guys should be written in pen. The bottom of the roster, the last 7-8 guys or so, is extremely fluid.

These are the guys that I think are cut candidates at some point between now and game 1:

HB
Neal
Jones

WR
Wilson
Tipton

OL
Simpkins (only if they want to carry 9 max instead of 10)

TE
Matavao

DE/DT
Bullard

OLB
Rumph

ILB
Stalbird

CB
Wright

Some are definitely more likely than others, but these 10 are definitely not untouchable. None showed out so much that they would be immediate snatches by other teams, though some have shown more promise than others. You can add Palmer to the list over whoever gets cut for him.

I think he is the least likely on the whole list, but it may come down to numbers. Coaches generally have a number they like to work from at different spots on the 53.

Matavao has to be strictly a numbers thing.

I know he was a draft pick, but it was late round and I do not remember his name being mentioned one single time in camp or a game.
