Saints buy a little time with Marcus Davenport, David Onyemata contract tweaks

So that’s interesting. ESPN’s Field Yates reported Tuesday that the New Orleans Saints tweaked their contracts with defensive linemen Marcus Davenport and David Onyemata, both of whom are set to become free agents when their deals void this offseason. The Saints moved those void dates back from Feb. 17 to March 14, which is the start of the new league fiscal year and the beginning of free agency.
Because both of these contracts have been restructured to move money around in past years, the Saints risk taking on dead money charges of $10.1 million for Onyemata and $7.6 million for Davenport if they are not re-signed. For context, the Saints ate dead money cap hits of $12.7 million and $11.5 million for Terron Armstead and Drew Brees in 2022, respectively.
If you’re curious, other Saints players whose contracts void this offseason include defensive lineman Tanoh Kpassagnon (leaving behind $1.9 million in dead money) and wide receiver Deonte Harty ($1.4 million).
This opens the door for one or both players to return for 2023, which makes sense. If the Saints can work out an agreeable deal with either of them it’s wise to retain them. Their only defensive tackle under contract for 2023 is Prince Emili, who joined the practice squad late in the 2022 season and never got into a game. Onyemata has taken a step back from his previous career heights but he’s still their best player on the interior.
And any contract extension with Davenport will face a lot of scrutiny. He’s struggled with injuries and inconsistent play throughout his career, and he’s coming off his worst year in the NFL after registering more ejections than sacks. That’s not to say he can’t turn it around and meet his potential, but that situation feels like one where both sides might be better off looking for a fresh start elsewhere.
So why did both players agree to move the void date back in the first place? This new timeline prevents either of them from receiving the franchise or transition tag this offseason, so they’ll have an easy path to free agency should the Saints choose to let them walk. In the meantime, this gives New Orleans time to manipulate the salary cap and move money around in other areas before making a decision on Davenport or Onyemata. It’s another subplot to watch in a very busy Saints offseason.

The Saints will be throwing that 7 mill down the shitter.

Wish they would've traded this dude. I wish they'd trade the entire roster off and start over. Load up on draft picks and get a young potential coach.
They can start with Lattimore. I'll bet they can get a ton for a guy who only decides to get up and play when his name will be flashed on national TV. Next up would be Thomas useless arse if he even has any trade value anymore.

Davenport is the definition of looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane. Onyamata is one drug test away from missing an entire season.

The Saints FO egos are going to bite them in the Arse on Davenport. They simply won’t allow themselves to admit the 2-1st rounders it cost was a horrible small school project mistake. They hit lightning in a bottle with Jahri and Colaton and thought they were experts on small school talent.
It’s done nothing but bite them in the arse on Trautman and Penning.
Because Davenport is a 1st rounder I see him getting the stupid extension like they did with Peat.

This makes the most sense. A contract that lets you be clear for next year.

Green Bay took an extra first from us that year and turned around and got the player I wanted (Jaire Alexander) who ended up being way better than Davenport. Loomis looks like a total tool for that trade.

Davenport was pure crap this year and has a long injury history. Got passed up by an udfa on the depth chart. No one is paying him this off-season. He will have to take an incentive based one year deal. Mark it down.

Jaire Alexander fell, I can't remember quite why.
But some of yal are ridiculous, hindsight is a bad trade but davenport was being coveted late teens/early 20s and they pushed all in. Hendrickson wasn't who he was at that point either and we needed a future player to ease away from cam.

that bone headed personal foul and subsequent ejection the other day was just so stupid and selfish.
he's always due to miss games each year too because of injury.
felt like we were weak up the middle of the D-line most of the time also this season. Got better towards the end of the season but by then it didn't really matter.

Onyemata quietly had a another good season. Not great, but good and consistent statistics at least for his career.
Davenport, man WTF happened. He played in 15 games this season and only had 0.5 more sacks than me this year. His season sack totals are 4.5, 6, 1.5, 9, 0.5. All I can say is thankfully his contract wasn't up after last season because then we would have likely thrown a ton of money at him thinking he was turning a corner.
Hell for as much shite as Peyton Turner gets, deservedly so for being a 1st rd pick and healthy scratch for several games plus being oft injured, he only played in 8 games this season and had 2 sacks.

He’s really not. When he was healthy he’s looked like an elite pass rusher, he just simply cannot stay healthy. Your post implies he just looks the part but can’t play the game
