In my mind, worst case scenario we are buying a draft pick in 2022. If he’s really taking a discount on this one year deal, he’s more likely to get a bigger contract when he moves on. Profit.

I’m just going off what CSP is saying man. Even if that part of my post is wrong, the rest is still right.

Not many NFL teams have a backup quarterback with seventy (70) games started at the position. And, he’s only 26 years old on a one-year deal. There is little down side to this transaction with lots of potential benefit should Brees or Taysom suffer an injury. Certainly, this shall be the most cerebral quarterback room and coaching circumstance Winston shall ever have been exposed to. He cannot help but learn and improve. His physical talent is obvious and he’ll encounter a very supportive, competitive, and professional locker room, which may also be a novelty for him. Therein may lie the opportunity to mature as well. Good insurance pickup by the Saints.

Payton is just talking in coach speak.
Tayson was never going to be the backup
Tayson was never going to be the backup

Right now Taysom IS the #2 QB for the Saints.
If JW doesn't beat out Taysom in whatever camp we get for the #2 spot he will be dumped with a quickness and another vet QB will be brought in to compete for it.

I wonder how the locker room will embrace him, didn’t him and our defense get into it a few years back?

If taysom is a true number two on this team we are throwing away his Swiss Army knife role contributions and Jameis doesn’t sign here.
I started a thread a few weeks ago trying to argue this, but quickly learned it was a fools errand.
Look at us now though. Love the signing. Love the scenario.

Yeah but Cameron Jordan is already hyping this up on Twitter. I thinking they’re fine.

No, he’s really not. Like Les said, he was never gonna be, and as soon as Jameis (or any other vet) signed, it became official. I said this in another thread, but we didn’t put that tender on him and pay him to be the backup QB. I think—especially since we didn’t draft a WR—that the plan is to use him even more this entire season like we did in the playoffs. He’ll be a QB/RB/TE/H-back/WR hybrid who I think becomes an even bigger part of the offense to exploit mismatches. I doubt he’ll ever be the starter here, but even if he winds up being someday, he was NEVER going to be the #2. Ever.

So if a game started tomorrow JW is the #1 backup to Brees?
C'mon man.
C'mon man.

The qb room just got collectively dumber

Underhill called this shite again. It’s time to realize he’s got legit sources now. Maybe that’s why he came back to the NOLA beat.
I’ll give Underhill credit in that he was speculating about it before any of the others, but he didn’t break it. Our writers scoop national news.
That said, Underhill is easily the best of the bunch.

In April the day after we signed him, probably not, though maybe. In September after camp, 100%. It will be obvious in camp when he gets a ton more QB reps than Hill.

Jameis is immature and can be cringe worthily awkward, but he’s not dumb.

Good move by MICKEY!!!
I think that once again the Saints have the BEST backup QB in the NFL. Even when Cam signs with a team, JW is a better QB IMO & there’s no doubt that JW’s a much better fit with the Saints than Cam would’ve been.
