Post Draft Grade: B

"Where do we start with the class that had both the offensive and defensive rookies of the year? It was sensational, one of the best rookie groups since I've been covering the draft. Cornerback Marshon Lattimore locked down one side of the field and had five interceptions. Ryan Ramczyk started every game, making a flawless switch from left tackle to right tackle once Terron Armstead came back healthy. Safety Marcus Williams is going to be remembered for the touchdown he gave up in the divisional-round loss to the Vikings, but he's a really good player. He had four interceptions and 71 tackles.

Then there's running back Alvin Kamara, a pick I questioned last year. Here's what I wrote: "A big question mark here was the value given up to draft Kamara. Even if you question any possibilities beyond 2017 for Mark Ingram or Adrian Peterson, trading a second-rounder to move up and take my No. 88 overall player is iffy."

OK, so the Saints traded a 2018 second-round pick to move into the third round in 2017 -- and got one of the most versatile backs in the NFL. Kamara led all rookies in receptions (81) and yards after the catch (696), and averaged 6.0 yards per carry. He had 14 total touchdowns. I got this one wrong. Absolutely.

New Orleans also got meaningful snaps from Alex Anzalone, who started the first four games before hurting his shoulder and being placed on injured reserve, and defensive end Trey Hendrickson, who had two sacks.

Again, this is a fantastic class. Enjoy this A, Saints.

New grade: A"

Kamara was a gamble, no doubt. Knowing Payton’s history in working with running backs and QBs, I would feel comfortable with any player he feels strongly about at those positions.

Hopefully we strike gold again this year

In terms of rookie year production, it may be the greatest draft of all time. If it’s not an A+ I don’t know what is.

Lol if you flash back to last years draft, according to many fans, every pick was a gamble. Fans were losing their shite during the entire draft:

Lattimore was a gamble because he had a history of hammy injuries and their was some DEs on the board.

Ramczyk was a gamble because he had hip surgery and people questioned his desire to play football long term. Plus people didn't think he would play last year with Armstead and Strief, so we "wasted" a pick on a back-up. Also, at this point, they wanted a DE...any DE.

Williams was a gamble because he went to a lesser known, non-football factory college and he was supposed to be a back-up too behind Bell and Vacarro. At this point in the draft people hated that we didn't reach for a DE already, so it didn't matter who we picked. People said things like the organization was like "ship without a rudder".

Kamara was a gamble because no one knew who he was and we already had enough RBs. Plus we traded a future pick to get an offensive luxury player. You read things like "Payton can't help himself" and "another toy for the offense" and "we traded a future pick to help the offense when our defense sucks".

Anzalone was a gamble because he is an unathletic *cough white cough* linebacker with an injury history.

Hendrickson was a wasted pick because we took too long to get a "real" DE. Plus he is unathletic *cough white cough* too and all the good DEs were taken.

Muhammad was a gamble because at this point people were having a tantrum anyway and no one heard of him, so the picked sucked.

I am interested to see the forum's reaction during this draft when we 1) trade up for a QB in the first round or 2) stay pat and don't take a TE, LBer, or DE 3) Trade picks to move up in the later rounds.

I'm curious about the Saints' record/history of trading up.

Off the top of my head, Ingram, Cooks, Morstead, Kamara all paid off.

Seems like when they believe in someone enough to trade up for them, their instincts are right & they turn out to be productive Saints.

Who am I missing and/or who turned out to be crap? I`m sure there are plenty Day 3 trade-ups that I can't remember.
