this... when combined with a franchise QB that you HAVE to pay when that contract comes up, it means that it's going to go away sooner rather than later, once the rookie contracts are up and guys need new deals that they can't afford to keep everyone...

didn't read the thread but just remembering there was similar sentiment after the Panthers season last year.

I think that yes, they'll be a good team but not a Super Bowl contender the next few years.

they will lose their OC after the Super Bowl most likely.

And what happens if they aren't as fortunate with injuries next year or the year after that?

I'm just not convinced that are many teams that can contend year-in-and-year out in today's NFL. Not taking anything away from ATL cause they've had a great year but they just don't strike me as a team that is going to be around FOR A WHILE.

feel like we've said this about other teams in the past and it just hasn't really worked out like that.

they do have some good young players on defense but would it REALLY shock anybody if they went 8-8 or so next year?? Carolina is still a tough team, Tampa is improving, and the Saints no doubt are going to give it a good shot too. I think with Payton dismissing some assistants that the team may get a message from that. What are they gonna do? I don't know but my money would be on the Saints doing better than 7-9 again.

I wouldn't say flash in the pan but I wouldn't say dynasty. I'd say they're made to be contenders for years to come. The offense will be there for years, they still need to work on the defense but have some nice pieces to build around (Jones, Beasley, Collins, Trufant). They've made some very solid picks the past few drafts and have spent their money very wisely. The difference between the Panthers last year and the Falcons this year is that the Panthers were a one-trick pony on offense (Cam). If you shut him down, the offense was nowhere to be found and the defense could only take so much. The Falcons this year, however, can afford for Ryan to have an off-game bc they have Freeman and Coleman ready to take over if needed. We'll just have to see how things play out over the next couple years.

I think they are building thier team the right way. They have a franchise qb, have made good moves in the Oline and have a strong run game. The WRs are too shabby. Lol

The D is getting better. Nice pieces at Dline, rusher, LB and CB. They found a hell of a S in Neal. They have drafted well.

However, they are losing Shanahan. That could be huge. And, when these younger guys come up for contracts, they'll have decisions to make. That will affect then. Quinn is a good HC so that stability will last.

I think they will be in the mix for a few years at least.

Yeah you never know. People are going to key in on their schemes more next year and they'll be the "team to beat." Some players who went off this season are going to start demanding untenable contracts. Going deep in the playoffs has real ramifications as far as forcing you to wait longer to focus on offseason issues. Playing more games has a physical repercussions for the players. And of course they won't have access to as many high quality day one starters drafting 31 or 32. At the end of the day, organizational strength is what allows some teams to deal well with these issues and keep getting back over and over (Packers, Giants, Patriots, Steelers, Redskins (pre-Synder)) and some teams to get there once and then start to fall away.

Eh.

They were 7-9 last season. The Panthers looked like they'd be good for a while as well.

Matt Ryan just finished probably a top 5 all time great season for a QB. If the Falcons sustain success, Ryan will have to continue to play well, and if that happens, you're putting him in an all time elite type status. I'm not quite ready to crown him yet.

They already have been good for a while. Matt Ryan is every bit as good as our QB and he is 10 years younger.

This is the first time in the past 4 years they've been good.

The previous 3 seasons they have a combined 18-30 record.

They had 0 injuries to their offensive line this year. Remarkable really

Offense will obviously take a step back next year. I think the hope is the defense continues to improve the way they have the last half of the season, and that becomes what determines our future success. Kyle and Matt this year have just been a very nice surprise.

I know they approved a lot in their numbers in the latter part of the season, but I've seen national media guys pointing out that they played a whole bunch of shitty offenses in that time. STL, SF, Seattle, Panthers, etc and it skews the numbers

The Falcons have 4 rookies starting on defense. 5 if you count Jalen Collins. Beasley and Jarrett are 2nd year starters. That's 7 starters just finding their way and how to play big boy football. Belicheck said today atlanta's team speed on defense is none like he's ever seen.

Until you saw their defense fall apart in the offseason

Cam Newton's insane year last year also wasn't sustainable.

What?
Atlanta's Defense is night and day since the Bye week:
Cardinals - gave up 19 pts
Chiefs - gave up 28 (Matt Ryan's worst performance where he threw a pick six and a pick 2)
@Rams - gave up 14 pts
49ers - gave up 13 pts
@Panthers - gave up 16 pts
Saints - gave up 32 points (and the last TD was against our scrubs)
Seahawks (Playoffs) - gave up 20 points
Packers (Playoffs) - gave up 21 points

The worst performance was against the Chiefs. If we played crappy offenses, fine, but we also didn't let them score, which is what good NFL teams do.
All I heard about from this same national media was how great a-Aron Rodgers was for a week before last weekend. Then after we beat that arse... "oh well he was sick, they had to take a bus because of bad weather, blah blah".

frick it, you know what, YUP - ATLANTA SUCKS. I just hope we can show up to Houston on time and put on our pants correctly. Sure hope Brady doesn't beat us too badly.

That's what happens when you let every starter in your secondary walk.
