Ray Guy hitting the above field screen at Superdome

I was talking to my son about best punters in NFL history, and brought up Ray Guy, who if my memory is correct, hit the big jumbo-tron in the Superdome twice one game when he was with the raiders.
They way i remember it, was he ask the officials before game what would happen if he hit that jumbotron and they laughed at him and said superdome had been open for X number of years and no one had ever come close to hitting it.
His first punt was right off the jumbotron.
any video or anyone at that game? I swear i think i watched it on TV, and everyone was laughing etc about it, and the announcers saying he ask them before the game and it was a rekick. It seemed like he did it one more time. Did anyone ever hit it again?
I am pretty sure we had good lead and lost

Not sure if any difference but the new screen in AT&T stadium got bonked some years ago

Probably because it would be silly to do so, as a punt that high would probably have no carry.

You have no clue what you are talking about. Guy had a monster leg which is why he's the only pure punter in Hall of Fame.

He hit it during the Pro Bowl. It was in the Dome in 1976 I think. I am pretty sure that Russell Erxleben hit it during a preseason. This will be the only place you ever will hear Ray Guy and Russell Erxleben mentioned together. The first is a classy guy and a Hall of Famer. The other is a piece of shite.

That was funny, they fired some fireworks off at halftime and caught a old banner that was in the rafters on fire and it fell on the field in the 3rd Qtr. Who would have thought that setting fireworks off inside a building would go wrong.
Found a story about the fire.

Only punter I ever seen that was close to Ray was Reggie Roby. One that will never be mentioned but could have been incredible if he had done it long term was Randall Cunningham ( Yes the QB ) He kicked for a little while when he first started out with Philly.

Not twice, just once and he did it on purpose. He almost hit it again on the re do though

I thought I recalled that too. I thought Erxleben was gonna be golden in the NFL. He wasn't.
ETA: 3 guys have hit it. Guy and Erxleben did it in the NFL but a Clemson freshman punter named Dale Hatcher did it vs Tulane in his second game in 1981.

It has been hit multiple times, some punters have to make sure they don’t hit it depending on where they are kicking from. Any NFL kicker can hit it though, it’s much lower

I remember that screen very well. That was a state of the art video board back in the 1980s.
We used to go to the dome often to watch pay for view broadcasts. Two of the most memorable ones were the Thrilla in Manila Ali Frazier lll which imo is the best boxing match in history and the 1982 LSU 20 Alabama 10 game which believe it or not was not on television.
