Swing and a miss on him.

more like a swing and miss on overpaying his contract, i think they are thinking he will resign for less, or they can just move on.

i think he can be serviceable for depth at the right contract

And people here said I was dumb for saying if the Saints would draft an OG, it wouldn't be to replace Lomis' beloved Peat, like many here hope they'd do (including me), but rather more likely to replace the underwhelming Ruiz.

The option would be cheaper than a new deal, if Ruiz continues to improve and is actually good. If he’s not any good, you don’t want to bring him back

+ Even if we pay him we have more control over next year's cost

For what it's worth, Peter King in his weekly column broke the 2020 draft into several categories: big hit, hit, incomplete, up in the air, and misses. He put Ruiz into the "hit" column, with the comment "usable right guard starter for the Saints." Compared to many of the other guys in that first round, we did pretty good.

How many guards make $15/per?

What kind of season would he have to have to make someone pay him more than that?

What kind of comp pick would we get if someone signed him for that?

I looked up spotrac yesterday and Ruiz’s $14+ mil option would have put him in the top 10 AAV for NFL guards. If we end up signing him to a long term deal, I highly doubt it’s in that range.

If they wanted to sign him long term, couldn't they have picked up the fifth year option then extended him? Seems like they're more interested in taking a wait and see approach based on his performance this year.

Highest paid guards make $20m per, Andrus Peat makes $11.5m per and carries the 11th highest AUV

Ruiz has 40 starts in the league and is still only 23. The first few guards off the board this year in the draft are all 23- Avila, Bergeron, Torrence. Cody Mauch is 24.

Point is, Ruiz was gaining some helium with his improved play before the injury. Still young and can play center as well. The recovery from the ankle will loom huge for him.

Chris Lindstrom-$21/yr

Falcons are a running team, they are desperate, and will continue to suck

Quentin Nelson-$20/yr
I would gladly trade a Peat, Ruiz, and 1st for him (I know it's not really possible but still)

The Saints wouldn't even give Marcus Williams a 1 year 14 million dollar guaranteed deal.

It's like a 99% chance peat will be gone next year.

Da frick you yabbing about chalky? What’s that have to do with anything

There was no fifth year option for Williams, he wasn’t a 1st rounder. He did play a year under the franchise tag and got a $70 mil deal tho.

Raiders declined his 5th year option at $8.03 million to franchise him for $10.5 million.

Let’s take the 64 starting guards. Maybe they see home as a top 20-30 guy. Above average starter, but not great.

You can see how guaranteeing him to 10 pay for a year could hinder contract talks if trying to pay him 25th guard kind of money?

That they didn't want to give ruiz 14 mil guaranteed for a 1 year deal.

If they don't come to terms on a contract after picking up the option, they would be on the hook for that.

If they wouldn't give Marcus Williams 14 mil for 1 yr, no way in he'll they would do it for ruiz.
