If you slide head first the defender can pile on you and not let you up, keeping the clock running..
Sliding feet first immediately ends the play as soon as he starts the slide. He does not have to wait for a defender to touch him.. so he can get back to the line and spike the ball.

Other than diving into the endzone, what player has ever slid headfirst? Have been a few kneel downs to keep from scoring, but again what players have kneeled down to avoid the hit.
They can be as salty as they want about this, but the player panic and launched himself into Shough. The player was 2 yards away when Shough initiated the slide. Even if they want to make the argument that the player "starter the process of the hit"; he could have pulled up or avoided trying to jam Shough hoping to cause a fumble.

We all know these things and everyone deals with it. Bitter pussycats

How do you prove it was a designed run? How does the ref know that Shough didn't intend to pass and then very quickly decide to scramble? What about a draw play or a delayed run?

They are also missing the fact that any player with the ball in their hands can get the same protection when they chose to give themselves up. It was not the fact that he was hit that resulted in the flag, he launched his shoulder into Shough after Shough gave himself up.

A team with a 5'9" 150 lb qb wants to ban sliding. OK
Bryce Young would last 2 weeks.

At the time it happened I for sure thought we were gonna get a PF flag for that hit on Young. But watching the slow mo it's not even in the same vicinity as the hit on Shough. They might try and fine him a bit for his post game comments on selling the play, but regardless it was clearly a penalty on CAR.

They wouldn't. If a QB takes a knee after running for a first down, they're going to get their head ripped off over there.
I want internet points for properly using they're, their, and there in the same sentence.
ETA Panther fans are whiny bitches.

It was a rotten break for Carolina the way it played out. I totally get why their DB laid that hit.
I'd be okay with the NFL reviewing that policy but ultimately I think it was a penalty and I can't imagine the league changing the rule, as QB's are just too valuable.
The good news for Carolina is that they still control their own destiny.

Watching the replays (I was unable to watch the game) looks like the DB hit Shoughs helmet with his. The one on Young it looks like the defender's body hits Young.

Yeah I think their DB definitely just reacted a bit late as he wasn’t expecting the slide but the way it shook out was definitely a penalty.
