ESPN lists Saints' offseason among worst in the NFL

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell ranked the offseasons of every team, he listed the Saints all the way down at No. 29 out of the 32 teams. Barnwell criticized the decision to go for it all without Drew Brees quarterback. He also doesn’t believe the trades to get first-rounders Chris Olave and Trevor Penning were worth it, stating that they have to be superstars to be good moves....

That's the fun part about the new "hot take" model of sports reporting. If both make multiple pro-bowls in the next 4 years absolutely no one will call him on his bullshite then.

They are all pissed that the Saints shite on their hot takes of getting a QB in the draft and will continue to build with Winston.

quote:

The Saints built their legendary 2017 draft class by adding extra picks in the first and third rounds; they’ve been trading away draft capital ever since.

This made me laugh, Saints have been trading away draft capital just about every year since Payton was here. Started in 2006 by trading picks for vets. Then in 2008 started trading future picks to get back into the draft for more picks

ESPN is dog poo that doesn't have a shape, it's just a blob of shite with vapors coming off of it from the heat

All you can do is raise an eyebrow and make sure to avoid it

If ESPN hates the Saints,
and CSP hates LSU,
then who does Brian Kelly hate?

It could very well turn out to be a terrible offseason. Only time will tell.

Try not to get all worked up in the meantime.

This is basically the SFP and Lester Earl argument; "I didnt like the trade up for Olave, and I'm salty about letting MW walk, so therefore everything the Saints did in the off-season is bullshite."

Reality is, we are in a prime position to make a playoff run.
We've held the staff together post Shyehann Pieghtuhn
The cap issue is MUCH better, and sustainable.
We've addressed key positions of need (for the first time in a long time).
We've minimized key FA losses with dollar for dollar value.
We took our shot at a franchise QB, but were sober enough not to overpay.

This offseason was all about stabilizing a good franchise that found itself with its toes hanging over a cliff, and I think the staff did a fine job at that. Whether that lost draft capital ends up hurting in the long run is to be seen.

Every take is literally based on how much we traded to get Olave. But the minute Olave becomes a start or super-contributor they will ask why other teams dont “go get an Olave”.

Get good players.

But the big question is do they hate the Saints more than Shaun hates LSU?

That's pretty much it.

By all accounts the Saints aggressively pursued a trade for Deshaun Watson. The reason it didn't work out is because they declined to pay the exorbitant costs Cleveland was willing to pay. A cost that could have crippled the cap if Watson doesn't perform well. So it isn't as if the Saints decided to keep Watson then go "all in". They re-signed Watson, at a fairly reasonable cost, because they felt he was the best option AVAILABLE.

All last season people bitched about the Saints having no WRs. They then draft what some thought was the best WR in the class...A player that likely would not have been available at 18 (their original spot before the Philly trade)...and people are mad because they "paid too much". They used their other pick to take a tackle. A position of need.

You could argue going "all in" would have been paying a ton to keep an oft-injured 30 year old left tackle. Certainly there is a risk Penning isn't and will never be as good as Armsted. But the costs of that risk is relatively low (compared to what it would have cost to keep Armsted).

The Saints drastically improved their biggest weakness from last season, WR. They didn't blow up their cap for the foreseeable future by paying a huge number to a QB who didn't play last season and is still unsure to play this season. They didn't grossly overpay to keep Winston. And they did this in a division where two teams (Atlanta and Carolina) have veteran bums and sub-1st round QBs on their rosters. And one team has a 45 year old QB that almost quit after last season.

Were the Saints supposed to tank and HOPE the get in position to take the next great QB?

I feel like I am alone in thinking this...Winston is a good QB. We were on the verge of 5-2 (I believe) beating TB with him at QB before his injury. We were 5-2 with a WR corps that would be considered terrible. Now, the same QB with more offensive weapons and a great defense is not projected by these guys to be better? I truly don't know what we they are seeing here differently....do these guys think Winston is THAT BAD? That seems racist to me...

And when he's not putting up top 5 numbers out the gate, this board will melt. The reality is, the team put him in a great position to become a valuable WR w/ minimal pressure to perform at a high level out the door. The earliest the team "needs" Olave to take that next step is now in 2023. And, if he has the ability to be "the guy" at this level, he has until 2024/2025 before the team needs to make a decision on MT

Yep. Barnwell hates the way the Saints manage the cap and draft picks. Has for as long as I can remember.

Where have I said this?

Yes, we overpaid for Olave.

Yes, we shouldn't have let MW go.

But I didn't say our offseason was terrible. It was just suboptimal and inefficient in terms of resources. There were worse offseasons.
