Cam Newton's surgically repaired shoulder has been the focus for much of the Carolina Panthers' preseason, but the focus turned to the franchise quarterback's left foot and ankle after a first-quarter sack in Thursday night's 10-3 preseason loss at New England.

Team medical staff examined Newton's left foot on the sideline after the sack, his second in three series. The 2015 NFL MVP then walked to the locker room, and the team later announced he would not return.

After the game, coach Ron Rivera said Newton was placed in a walking boot and was being taken for X-rays but didn't offer further comment.

"We're hoping it's not too bad," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney told the team radio network regarding Newton. "We'll find out more tomorrow. But I hope it's not too bad."

Newton, 30, underwent surgery on his left ankle in March 2014.

Newton sat out the first two preseason games as the staff used extreme caution in his recovery from January arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder, the second time the right shoulder had been operated on in three offseasons.

He completed his first four passes Thursday for 22 yards before his first incompletion, a throwaway to avoid a sack.

Newton didn't get rid of the ball on the play he was injured. He scrambled around the pocket before going down with New England defensive lineman Adam Butler holding on to his left foot.

Replays didn't show anything out of the ordinary, but Newton was favoring the foot when he left the field.

How big is the boot? Does it end just above the foot or does it end just below the knee?

From the replay it looks like a minor fracture of the 5th metatarsal. Probably will be back by week 3 or 4.

No matter a person's build, the body isn't meant to take hits like football players do. And these past few years he's taken a lot, not to mention how he was running at Auburn and his first few years in the league. If he wasn't as big as he is, he would have probably been out the league already, but it seems his build has bought him at least a few years. Seems like that may be coming to an end and if his line can't protect him, his career could end sooner rather than later, or at least being able to play to his best ability. Which, we've already started to see some.

I bet his walk to the locker room wasn’t overly dramatic at all

He just does that drama, because he thinks it makes him look better when he comes back and plays

I don't think he is hurt and I don't think he misses time. He was getting killed and quit.

Cam will find a way to accessorize his walking boot.

He’s the NFL’s version of Jaden Smith.

It must be wonderful to be a Panthers’ fan.

Not many players I would wish this on....however, I would have to agree with your sentiment.

He's 30

I'm 30 and shits already breaking on me more than it used to and I'm not am athlete. He's been taking hits for most of his life... He's not going to have much longer of a career if he can't learn to sit in a pocket full time

Yep, even as big as he is and can take a pounding, QB's take different hits.

Just highlights the changes they need to make to the preseason.

It’s interesting because you hear coaches talk about how it’s hard enough to evaluate guys and prepare for the season in the limited time and opportunity they already have. Especially now with limited practices and offseason workouts.

Maybe start training camp a week or two earlier and have more joint practices with other teams in exchange for cutting one or two of these preseason games.

As for Cam, it’s a damn shame to see him go down in the preseason. I wouldn’t be honest if I didn’t say I took it as good news at first. One less division team to worry about if he’s out, but it feels lame to lose anyone in the preseason. When Cam is on he’s one of my favorites to watch. Hope it’s nothing serious.
