To me that signals Armstead to the bench, which is disappointing. But he hasn't played as well as Strief so you play the best players.
I can't see Peat outplaying Armstead as a rookie. Armstead has more than lived up to expectations as a young player. His run blocking is great too

Damn. I thought Armstead could be a really good T for us.

He's play guard before (which I knew before Duncan told me). He makes the most sense.

so maybe put Armstead at G?
He's more of that prototypical size. I know some teams saw him as a guard coming out.

I think it signals getting younger. It signals one last year of Streif at either RT or at LG. Armstead and Peat will eventually be the Tackles. They will go younger and save the money.
Remember when Bryce Harris had to step in for injured tackles? Yeah.

I still think we take Collins and use a pick on him to do so. I would imagine Payton has some people in the know in the state to where he can get a little more than everyone else.
I would spend a 4th on him but I know that wouldn't be met well around here

Maybe so and I think he'd excel at it.
But I also think he is on track to be an elite LT. Don't want to give up on that

I can see us drafting a guard in the 3rd round. No way Payton has THAT much faith in Lelito
Posted on 5/1/15 at 11:29 am to Lester Earl
Armstead would be killer at guard. That speed, pulling, getting out front on those screens

I can see that too. He certainly wouldn't be happy about it, but it would be a good move.

We picked the best LT in the draft.

Well, God forbid Strief or Peat go down with an injury, we will have a very good back up in Armstead. Even though I'd rather him start than Strief just because he's so young.

cause like we were gonna put there arse at guard, we weren't concerned with a tackle. And frankly not many of us liked the idea of scherff or la'el at tackle.

This, no one is going to be Scherff at Tackel, no one. A stupid team might draft Collins to play tackle, but his value is at guard.

And LTs are the most important position on the field next to QB. I'm totally OK with this if he turns into our LT of the future. It's always good to have consistency there, especially to build that camaraderie with the QB.
in a couple years or so we'll have a young QB and young LT. They can grow together
Posted on 5/1/15 at 11:39 am to Neauxla
Because every Tom dick and Harry knew Collins would be moved to guard if we drafted him.

"Terron's done a great job obviously and Zach's been fantastic. Every year, we're trying to draft the quality of the player that's available, and all that other stuff will handle itself and work itself out," Payton said.
And their first round picks since he's been here have more often than not been poor choices, so I don't see why saying they've always done it this way justifies it.
1st round Saints picks under Payton:
2006 - Bush (Good player)
2007 - Meacham (mediocre)
2008 - Ellis (mediocre)
2009 - Jenkins (mediocre)
2010 - Patrick Robinson (mediocre)
2011 - Jordan (Good player)
2011* - Ingram (1.5 good years with 2.5 wasted and cost 2 picks)
2013 - Vaccarro (not looking great after last year)
2014 - Cooks (showing promise)
SO out of 9 1st round picks, several of which they traded up to get, 2 have been above decent to mediocre for more than 2 years of their rookie contracts. Their history is not good.

Is Armstead as untouchable as we assume he is? Any chance he gets demoted... ?

"I don't see that initially," Payton said.
oh
Lael will, duh

lolwut? He'd be an average LT in the league, probably one of the top half RT's, and one of the best G's right away. He could certainly play T.

FYI all of that presser info (this happened immediately after the draft) is why I have been melting down. He confirmed we spent 13 on a backup.
I don't mind investing in the future, especially when it comes either line, but why would you do such a thing when Brees is nearing the end of his career?
The 13th pick should have been directed towards the best possible player available. I'm still not convinced that Peat fit that criteria.
