@nick_underhill

Someone asked me how many 20-yard out routes Brees has thrown throughout his career. I didn’t know the answer. I watched all of his throws since 2006 to figure out how many times he’s targeted every route.

the amount of time he put into that is insane. Underhill is probably the best beat writer in the NFL. we're lucky to have him.

+1

Which is why a lot of the know-nothing amateurs in local media who've been doing JR High School-level work for years resent him.

And the interaction he has with locals through social media, going on smaller podcasts etc that don't really benefit him, is admirable as well.

There's been a few slick comments about him from some local guys.

A few weeks ago a couple guys were criticizing him for not badgering Marcus Williams more to talk about the play in Minnesota last year. Williams addressed the play and told the media he wouldn't be talking about it anymore. Underhill respected that and moved on. That wasn't good journalism to some, who I guess wanted him to waterboard an answer out of Williams.

it's just peons like Eric Asher and Kaare Johnson who are so butthurt that this dude just showed up and like instantly became a Saints institution because he puts the fricking work in.

really hadn't followed him too much (stopped paying attention to local media years ago), but I had a lot of respect for him bc of this

Too many journalists out there get a kick out of asking the same things over and over again to get a reaction, then demand apologizes if the person is short with them. It's also why I can't stand to watch press conferences, if there are 20 questions you can guarantee it will be 3-4 actual questions asked numerous times.

he's gotten offers from national beats before since he's been here and turned them down. claims he's happy where he is and that the advocate lets him do whatever he wants.

There's nothing stopping WalMart brand Woodward and Bernstein from getting off their asses, standing in 100 degree training camp heat and asking Marcus Williams whatever questions they want.

It is, but I do have a lot of questions about routes that don't immediately fit.

For example, are wheel routes Go/Seam? Are flats considered screens or outs?

Underhill knows football, so I'm not questioning him, he had to lump things together at some point.

Yeah no shite. I could tell right away the first time I read an article of his that the dude REALLY digs deep into the subject to try to get as much accurate info as possible.

I think it may have been a piece on Rob Ryan's defense or something. Like just VERY detailed shite.

And he's very friendly and will take time to answer questions.

I felt the same way about Holder when he first got to the TP, but then he quickly started going downhill (my guess is Duncan rubbed off of him too much, and Duncan and Payton have never liked each other).

And even with how much I like(d) Tripps works, Underhill is just on another level with detail.

He definitely puts EVERY local writer, and most national writers, to shame.

We are truly lucky to have him.

Wheels are likely go routes. They just start in the backfield (or inside out).

Flats wouldn't be screens, so likely outs.

He just used the traditional route tree when classifying things. If you broke it down too much it would be a lot harder to digest.

Edit:
Looking at the graphic, maybe flats are considered "screens" for the purpose of the traditional route tree. I think it's more about the route run than what else is going on.

THat was an incredible article. Great analysis and evaluation.

It is rare that you find this type of reporting.

Great job to Nick and The Advocate.
