Saints GM Mickey Loomis on that missed call: 'It goes under the category of life ain't fair'

quote:

Loomis didn't want to comment on the actual play, deferring to the statement sent out by team owner Gayle Benson on Monday. "(Her statement) does a great job of capsulizing how we feel about it," Loomis said. "We'll stand on it." The Saints haven't heard from the NFL since immediately after the game when Sean Payton was told the officials missed the call. Loomis said he isn't frustrated that the league hasn't put out a statement. "It is what it is," he said.

So does the NFL own the rights to the fan video of this non-call? Can't they just use that video instead? Then it's just a question of whether news outlets actually want to show footage of it.

I heard the interview with Mickey Loomis last night on the radio. He was mumbling in his response, but I heard him clear as day answer, "Yes, we've spoken" or something to that effect when asked if he was contacted by Riveron, the NFL's Head of Officiating.

So, Mickey's gotten a response from them, albeit off-the-record. NFL owes that much to the Saints, but feels that they owe nothing to the fanbase.

This is bullshite but I don’t see how they can stop use of a spectators video.

There was a guy photographing pictures at the game years ago. SI wanted to use some of them. The NFL strong armed and told him he couldn't do it anymore or he would face legal action. The NFL controls all property and the media. Espn and all the networks are under the thumb of the NFL. If the NFL says jump, they ask how high.

I would guess the NFL would say they come under their video license. Or say they were illegally obtained.

As long as Goodell is Commish and Payton is a HC, that team won't be appearing in the Superbowl. We need to get that through our collective head.

Payton did something to Goodell that created an animus against Payton that is never going away. Who knows what really caused this animus? We can only speculate.

What is not speculation for me personally is that this animus exists and that it is permanent.

Or the NFL could challenge the notion that it's a newsworthy item, or the NFL could accuse the unauthorized user of the product image of using the image to Defame the Character of the entertainment entity NFL.

Most info outlets will not want to fight the NFL's lawyers on this. The NFL has a lot of money to fight court cases and the NFL has a very strong motivation to protect the reputation of its product and its product's integrity.

And that just absolutely flummoxes me.

It’s totally bass-ackwards. Television is the NFL’s life blood. If the networks got together and told Goodell/the league to get stuffed, they’d really have no choice but to get stuffed. But it seemingly doesn’t work like that.

Other aspects of the game's video and audio is getting sanitized.

Can't wait to watch the condensed fictional version of the game showing on the NFL Network.

With the Netflix/Amazon Prime/Hulu/etc movement, your traditional "television" powers like Fox, ABC, CBS are threatened. Seems that the streaming giants would gladly take over sole distribution rights of these games, without blinking. They've got the cash.

I recorded this the other night to go back and try to read the lips of the discussion between Payton and Cavaletto. The one discussion I was really interested in was during the break prior to the kick before OT. Cavaletto has his back to the camera and right when he turns around the screen flips to a picture of the Superdome then back to the original picture.

That's not the way it occured in real time on tv.

This is insane if they start doing this on a widespread basis. It's a typical Goodell masterclass in how not to handle a difficult situation.

The only article mentioning game is Whitworth’s ‘It’s an excuse’ tirade.

Goodell must testify before Congress.

Anything less than this and we should vote out the entire delegation.

That's precisely why the antitrust exemption needs to be revisited. The NFL clearly needs competition.

NFL Films own all the video and audio and you must have expressed written consent to use the both. They say it every game on TV. They can give and take away the consent to use the video.

No, that's not what that means. That announcement is for commercial purposes. They can't deny news outlets the use of their video if it's newsworthy. I guess they could refuse to give the news outlets the video but it was broadcast so that horse is out of the barn.
