Jeff Ireland 'absolutely' wants a GM job, but wants a Super Bowl first

INDIANAPOLIS -- Jeff Ireland, the New Orleans Saints' assistant general manager, had a banner year in 2017.
As college scouting director, he runs the Saints' draft preparation, and the team last season had one of the most productive rookie classes in NFL history, a group that included AP Offensive Rookie of the Year Alvin Kamara and AP Defensive Rookie of the Year Marshon Lattimore.
Ireland has been with the Saints for the past three drafts, and the team's rookie classes have gotten better each year. So it stands to reason that Ireland, who was general manager of the Miami Dolphins from 2008-13, could soon be rewarded with another opportunity to be a GM in the NFL.
Ireland, who works as the No. 2 to longtime General Manager Mickey Loomis, said he "absolutely" hopes to have the top job with an NFL franchise again. But he also said he is in no rush to leave a Saints team with a bright future.
"I'm not in a hurry," Ireland said Wednesday at the NFL combine. "I told myself when I got to New Orleans that I was going to help this team build. I'd have to really think twice about leaving the New Orleans Saints before we win a Super Bowl, but sometimes those jobs come and you can't turn them down.
"I want to win more than anything else. I've been in this business for 23 years and I've never been to a Super Bowl. It's on the top of my list."
Ireland on Wednesday accepted an award the Saints won from Inside The League, an organization that provides services to agents and scouts, for having the best draft class in 2017. The Saints received more than 8 in 10 votes for the award.
Ireland's run as Dolphins GM proved to be ill-fated, as Miami went to the playoffs and had a winning record just once in his six years at the helm. He said Wednesday he learned "a million things" from his time leading the Dolphins, and that experience should help him if or when he gets another shot.
"I know when I focus on one thing or a couple things, that's what I'm really good at," he said. "If I ever get the opportunity to be that again, I'm going to do a better job of delegating other things to other people where I can (keep) my focus on a couple different things that I know I'm good at."

can't fault him for that. If he has another kick arse draft he will get his wish of a super bowl this year

well hopefully we fulfill that wish this season

1) Make Loomis the President of the organization, giving him overall control of both the Saints and the Pelicans.
2) Promote Ireland to GM
3) ????
4) SuperBowl

Even if Ireland does leave eventually...I think CSP learned a valuable lesson. CSP has always done a pretty good job of bringing in offensive talent, but he seriously needs help on the defensive talent evaluation.
We'll be a good team for a long time if CSP keeps hiring good assistant coaches, & also has someone helping him with defensive talent evaluation.

And people wonder why the Pels have sucked.

I think he is better suited for the job than Loomis. Loomis has made some terrible decisions and then we hire Ireland and our Draft class is A+. I agree with 1st poster. Make Ireland GM. He is better. Make Loomis something else.

Take the Pelicans out of my post then. I don't know what this means because I don't follow basketball.
Loomis does a good job managing contracts, he just needs to be far away from personnel decisions. Loomis should keep a role, but Ireland should be the decision maker.

Honestly, I really wish Loomis would move more into an upper management role to help Benson and move Ireland into the GM role if it came to it.
I mean since he's been here we've had the best draft run for sure since Payton has been here and maybe ever in the history of our franchise.
(I know the 06 draft won a SB so let's chill, but, simply based on performance so far and project ability.)

Oh, I completely agree. I'm just not sure that will happen while Benson is alive.
I'm sure CSP could somehow make that happen eventually though. I doubt he wants to lose Ireland. Loomis does a good job handling the money, but CSP & Ireland make most (if not all) of the personnel decisions.

My understanding is that Loomis is already running both teams as the president and Ireland is the defacto GM

He will be a GM, here in NOLA. Loomis will become “senior VP” or “President” and handle business affairs and contracts. Ireland will get the GM title soon enough.

He's already Executive VP. Next step would be

or “President”
There you go

Yeah, if keeping Ireland is about money and title, they can just promote Loomis out of the way.

F all that let
let Loomis run the Pelicans & be a special advisor or something for the Saints
let Ireland be the GM outright

frick that.
Let him fail up and be the de facto owner. Call it whatever you want.
But hire a Pres of Basketball Ops for the Pelicans and hire Ireland as GM of the Saints.

Loomis is a Capologist and that is what he was hired to do. He is the GM because he sucked up to Benson to where they are BFF's. He is not qualified to be a GM and his draft classes that were produced with that title would have got anyone but him fired.

Then make it facto.

He is the GM because he flipped on Randy Meuller when Benson questioned him.

If this is true, then Ireland is a GM, so why is Ireland saying he wants to be GM?
