Shawn Knight..... I remember he was so bad we swapped him for Denver's first round bust (Ted Gregory ??) a small noseguard... then we quickly cut that guy !!

Erxleben was a 1st rd pick, right? Trying to remember...

If he was, that's it. You can pick all the busts you want, and they don't match up (especially those that weren't even 1st rd picks).
Picking a punter/placekicker in the first round, who couldn't even be your placekicker, tops anything else.

Antonio Pittman has to be in consideration. 4th rd pick that got cut before the season started.

who was the white guy who played defensive line? Shawn somebody? He was truly awful
------------------------------------------------------------

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!
Shawn Knight!

I worked for the Saints for a couple of years. We drafted him in the 1st round of the '87 draft. Somewhere about the 10th or 12th pick. He'd had a shitload of sacks his senior year at BYU - maybe 17? - and was a load. He was huge, especially for back then. I'm a hair under 6'-5", and he was taller than me. He was easily 280#, maybe 290#. The guy was a physical specimen.

The bad news was that he was kind of spastic for a pro athlete. During one preseason game, he was rushing from DE on a screen. As the QB passed, he put his hands up and promptly fell down. I've heard about people who can't walk and chew bubblegum at the same time, but I'd like my 1st round draft choice to be able to rush the passer and raise his arms at the same time.

The Saints/Jim Finks ran him off after his first season. We traded w/ Denver for some other guy who sucked, but also had bad knees. Tony Gregory, maybe?

Knight didn't last long in the league. A year with the Saints, one w/ Denver and then a year or two somewhere else. Good dude, bad NFL player. I hope he invested wisely.

The brilliance behind taking Erxleben in the 1st round was that he could punt AND kick! Who cared if we already had both a serviceable punter and kicker. We would save a roster spot!

As it turned out, he was a lousy NFL kicker. He'd set an NCAA record at Texas, kicking a crazy long field goal. The Saints even signed his college placeholder as a free agent to try to help him. When it became painfully obvious that Erxleben was a deadly liability in the kicking game, we signed - are you ready? - Garo Yepremian! frick us...

Erxleben lasted at least 3 or 4 years with the Saints. Shawn Knight was on the bench by Thanksgiving.

I'd say drafting a future HOF player in the second rd is great value for the Chargers.

Actually, how about those first two picks that draft? Tomlinson, then Brees? Fiya!!

Shawn Knight was the worst. A ref the following season made 2 tackles in a game for us. And the commentator pointed out that the ref had more tackles in a game for us than Shawn Knight ever did.

Dunbar didn't flat out suck. He led the team in rushing in 92 and then had injury issues.

Just because nobody has mentioned them yet in the pantheon of shitty first round picks or I just didn't see them:

1. Les Kelley
2. Royce Smith
3. Kurt Schumacher

What's sad about most of these guys mentioned is that that they were FLAT OUT BUSTS, PERIOD. I mean, when you talk about Alex Molden, at least he was a starter. A lot of the guys like the ones I mentioned and Larry Burton/Lindsay Scott/etc. was that they played on some of the shittiest Saints teams ever and they STILL couldn't even see the field. And even Lindsay Scott couldn't get playing time with Bum Phillips when his competition at WR was literally two slow white guys (Groth/Merkens)

Didn't Dunbar have a serious knee injury? I can't remember the timing. If it was before the draft, then it was a really bad decision by the Saints, but nothing will ever equal the Erxleben pick. If the knee injury happened in camp before the first season then that was just bad luck. It would (kind of) be like saying the worst draft pick in Celtics history was Len Bias because they wasted a high pick on him and he never did squat.
