But the bottom line is that we have the same defensive players as last year, just a year older (and now with even less depth).

the main thing is putting Wilson and Galette in positions more suited for their skill sete

Hicks is a year older

Kennan Lewis is a key FA acquisition

Vaccaro & John Jenkins thru the draft

Im really not trolling.

Basically alot of my mindset comes from the fact that in the first preseason game, we still trotted out will fricking herring and roman fricking harper as starters. At that point, our only new starter was keenan lewis and hicks (although hicks played as half a starter in 2nd half of season).

You cant tell me with a straight face that vaccaro will start over jenkins next weekend. Do you really believe martez will make that much of a difference in pass rush this year?

All these other new guys are BACKUPS. To improve a defense, you need players at least good enough to start on the worst D in the league.

once again, who cares who STARTS at FS. you could list vaccaro as the last safety for all I care and bury him on the depth charts just to make people like you and the other 13 post guy say MAN WE DRAFTED WRONG AGAIN! but I bet you he's going to get playing time no matter what and be pretty damn good.

Not start but what difference does it make whether he starts or is in there for 75% of the snaps. He's so versatile he will be all over the field. He even said they have a ton od packages for him that wasn't even shown during preseason. Don't be surprised to see Harper lining up at the OLB and us using 3 safeties.

Yes. The dude is a freak and was super raw two years ago. He fits this scheme better and I believe the sky is the limit for this guy. He really is a physical freak and has all the tools to be very successful

Will we be bad on D? Yes, probably. BUT, let's remember we set an all-time NFL record for awfulness on D last year so we HAVE to get better....

It's really all about turnovers IMO, we are going to give up chunks of yardage but if we can do a little better job of pressuring the QB and force a few more turnovers we will be fine

Let's get something straight. Our defense is gonna be pretty bad. However, it won't be as bad as last year. And that's a good start for me.

While I know lofton is a solid player (and maybe maybe cam jordan this season)

You must be one of the assholes that argued with me about how good Jordan was last season.

ANYONE who thinks Jordan didn't have an outstanding season is one of those stupid people who think ONLY sacks make you a good DE. And he had 8 from the run defending DE spot. And he was by far our best defender against the run.

I'll go through each spot with you, but first I want to share with you our problems with Spags and why he was shite canned.

Last season Spags made two HUGE mistakes on the DLine. First he played Eliis far too much and he played Hicks and Bunkley far too little. Second was because he run defense was so unsound and we were getting gashed, Galette and Wilson barely saw the field.

Then there was the whole square peg in a round whole issue of playing almost strictly a zone scheme that none of our DBs outside of maybe IAQ was suited for.

And then there was all the injuries to the OLBs(sound familiar?) forcing guys like Shanle and Herring to start far too many games. Once Vilma and Hawthorne were healthy we looked 100x better there.

Spags' unwillingness to adapt his scheme in any way to better suit his players caused a huge rift and he lost them.

Bye bye captain frick face.

DE: Last year we had Jordan and Smith as the primary guys. This year Smith is gone and we have a legit 2 deep rotation with Jordan, Hicks, Foster, and Walker. 3 out of 4 of them were ranked in the top 5 of all 3-4 DEs by PFF.

NT: Bunkley is actually starting like he should have last year and has been solid. Spags played Tom Johnson far too much and he may not even make the 53 this year. And it looks like we got a 3rd round steal with Jenkins who I am very much enjoying eating my crow on.

ILB: We have a legit 2 deep rotation here also with Lofton, Vilma, Hawthorne finally being healthy, and Humber showing he is a play maker. Vilma's health is the only questionable issue and then we have 3 other guys who can start anyway.

OLB: Here is where there are questions due to injuries to all 4 of our top guys(two of which are lost for the year and two of which we should get back for week 1) and a former starter who has played well in preseason, just not with us. Richardson finally showed up last night, but the hope is Galette's and Wilson's natural talents can equal on the field success and that Haralson will pick up where he left off with the 9ers.

CB: Greer is still our best corner and still one of the most underrated players in the league. The only reason he has looked even remotely "bad" is he has been banged up 2 out of the last 3 seasons but he is fully healthy again. The rest of our corners are question marks, especially since the big signing of Lewis, who has looked good in practice but has looked average at best in the games, hasn't given us a legit number 2 yet. The hope is either him or Robinson step up but at the moment we may struggle here.

Safety: Harper has looked miles better going back to doing what he does best and Vaccaro is definitely a huge plus. Jenkins still seems to be a weak link and given our question marks at corner has me slightly concerned about everyone not named Harper, Vaccaro, or Greer.

So overall only 2 guys are playing the same positions as last year(Jenkins and Greer). With the scheme change everyone in the front 7 has new responsibilities(you can argue Lofton is still playing Mike but it's a little different in a 3-4).

Bunkley, Hicks(or Foster), Galette, Haralson(or Wilson), Hawthorne, Lewis, and Vaccaro are all now going to be playing HUGE parts when last year they weren't here or barely played. 3 of the guys that were starters were great players(Greer, Lofton, and Jordan). Harper is looking much better no longer playing zone.

The only starter from last year that looks like a liability is Jenkins and we have Vaccaro if he doesn't step it up.

In short, whole new scheme, new alignments, new philosophies, and a bunch of new faces and/or assignments. Only one bad piece remaining from last year.

I just put pen to paper and counted six guys who are new starters or will have significant time in the base package:

Vacarro
Lewis
Hawthorne
Galette
Haralson/Wilson
Hicks

If we expand the overhaul to the 2 deep, you get guys like Humber and Big Jenkins and Foster and Walker and Carr.

Then there is the schematic change, which you hit on.

I love you guys.

There are going to be times where we look terrible. There will be times where we come up with huge stops and turn overs. It'll be a mixed bag before we have another year or two to work out our personnel.

lewis (who has looked pisspoor so far),

this right here shows how much you have not paid attention this camp, thus also showing how ill informed your thread is. Lewis has been stellar all camp. I get it though, you saw him play bad in one preseason game; therefore, he has looked "pisspoor" to you. Well damn brah, I cun't believe Paeyton hasn't looked at that same game and decided he sucks. Oh wait, he has, and he's also paid attention to the other 36 days of camp/practice and realized that he has been doing great. But you're right; one preseason game makes a career.

here's one article saying as much.... now educate yourself and come back to post accordingly

I think we'll be better.

there are a few new starters and I'd bet the defensive players are tired of hearing about how bad last year was.

one thing the defense did do well last year was force turnovers. The Saints finished #12 in takeaways. That stat was lost on most people b/c every other facet of the defense struggled. Those turnovers kept some games closer and gave us chances to win and some were the keys to a victory.

Man, if we could finish close to that or even somehow better than that... the league better watch out.

He is. Butler won't be back in week 7, but may be activated so that he can return for the end of the season; ie, for our playoff push.
