Drops too many balls in critical moments

That's why he only had 3 TDs.

The kicker is that Delp is viewed as an elite blocking TE

Guy like Darnell Washington was an elite blocker

People are deferring to calling Delp a blocker bc his production wasn’t there. He’s definitely a willing blocker but he was the 4th or 5th highest graded blocking TE in the draft. Still good enough to get him run and this offense will do him a lot of favors. The cautionary tale is that there are TEs with this profile who come out every year to big expectations from the fanbase. As a 3rd rounder, if he can just carve a role, it’s a win.

Agree with most of what you say on this thread but not this. Considering the available talent we left on the board there, I disagree. We could’ve had a nickel or IOL starter. Delp has to be more than a role guy for that selection to be a win.

Master of the Garbage yards

You're not entirely wrong here. Almost 700 of his yards came while we were playing from behind.

He only had 3 TDs. 2 in the red zone. He only had 40 yds total in the redzone. I know damn well he had passes thrown his way in the redzone , and either flat out dropped them or couldn't hold on.

He can do it all between the 20s but in the redzone, I'd appreciate it if they went to Delp. Luckily we have Tyson. Juwan won't get near the yards he had last year because we have MUCH BETTER options than him. Yes, Tyson has much better hands and seperation as a rookie than Juwan could dream of.

That doesn't make them garbage yards. How many of those yards came in close games?

Games can flip quick in the nfl and unless you are down by a lot in the 4th (the amounts depending on the time left), it's not garbage yards. Those can actually be the hardest yards to get until a team goes into prevent near the very end.

Being that we only lost in a blowout twice I'd say most of the yards. It's not garbage yards but it's stat padding. He is not reliable in the redzone.

This is definitely a problem with juwan Johnson. He disappears too much for my liking.

I think delp is a really good blocker and he will start there. Hopefully they can get him comfortable in the offense to start using his athleticism in the passing game.

With the Saints adding Delp and Fant I just like the depth more at TE now.

They could maybe run more plays out of 12 personnel or maybe even 13.

I'd be good with 12.

they couldn't really do that last year.

4th or 5th highest graded blocking TE also may fluctuate greatly based on % of snaps blocking. Delp lined up In-line as a blocking TE on 70-80% of his snaps for his college career. 1,946 snaps and over 70% primarily as a blocker.

A WR could have the 4th/ 5th least drops but have 100 more targets than the rest. They really didn't use him as a 2 way player. Its almost more impressive knowing that he was still ranked 4th/5th with over 1,000 blocking assignments.

But yes, its best to temper expectations.

Juwan Johnson is an absolute specimen of a human, and born to play TE.

That was one of his weaknesses coming out of college. He will never learn to consistently catch. His size is why he has stuck around. He was projected as a practice squad player. The TE position definitely needs an upgrade.

Every team could have an 800yd TE if they utilize the position and give him enough targets. I rather see 8+TDs and 400 yds than 800yds and 3 TDs.

JJ had the 3rd highest catch % for any TE with over 77 receptions.. The only 2 TE's above him were Shultz/ Ferguson.

Brock Bowers: 64 rec 74.42% catch
JJ: 77 rec 75.49% catch

Only 4 TE's had more receptions last year: Shultz/ Ferguson/ Pitts/ McBride. He had the 3rd highest catch % of all TE's and had the 5th most receptions.

Y'all are not saying what yout think you are. NOW has he made drops/ fumbles in CRITICAL positions that were extra costly? Yes. That's what drives this sentiment but in reality he was statistically a top 5 reliability at the TE position.

Also, he catches Shough's ball better than Rattler's due to the former throwing with more anticipation. Good things to come from JJ.

Good point

Between Johnson, Fant, and Delp we should have collectively top 10 production from the position.

I'll get shite for it but if you look at full TE rooms its hard to see us outside of the Top 3-4.

1. Loveland/ C Kmet/ S Roush
2. JJ/ N Fant/ O Delp
3. Bowers/ Mayer
4. Kittle/ J Tongues
5. McBride/ T Reiman/ E Higgins
6. K Sadiq/ M Taylor
7. T Higbee/Terrance F/ C Parkinson/ Klare
8. Pitts/ Hooper
9. Kincaid/ Knox
10. Laporta/ B Wright/ T Conklin
11. Goedert/ E Stowers/ Calcaterra

Side note: credit to the Jets for M Taylor/ Sadiq. I like where they are going with that. Can't believe I just gave credit to the Jets...
