I think Loomis is just screwing with the fans now saying he can do anything he wants to do and he doesn’t have anyone to slap him on the hand and tell him he’s an idiot and not in charge like Sean would have done. Loomis wants to act like he’s a big boy now and he’s going to prove it by keeping the worst head coach of all time and an OL coach that has overseen the destruction of our OL from a top 5 unit to a bottom 5 unit in just 2 seasons. It’s hard to not be done with this organization until they make the necessary changes and clean house. Khai Harley deserves the GM tag over Loomis as far as i’m concerned. We need a new OL coach though right now.

Why? Explain your reasoning in detail.

Did Marrone draft Penning? Did Marrone frick up Ram’s knee?

Did Marrone develop Penning? Did Marrone’s unit have a positive year or one of the key reasons we may have missed the playoffs?

Is the oline the only unit that under performed?

Nope. Personally I believe the whole coaching staff should be fired.

Nevertheless, the oline was a major problem in my opinion which factored into us losing games. Personally I think its strange we fire the WR coach but somehow think Marrone doesn’t deserve to get fired.

Marrone is one of the good old boys

This organization has a way of keeping the “club” together

Even during the 7-9 seasons

I think you’re an arse

But agree with you here

5 unit to a bottom 5 unit in just 2 seasons

2021=False, Saints O-line ranked 18th at the end of the season.

2022=All I can find is they dropped to 28th going into week 15. Obviously they dropped 10 spots and bottom 5 in the league sucks. Overall they sucked, no doubt, both run blocking and pass blocking, but injuries REALLY screwed us. Let's not forget Pete Carmichael is the playcaller
Digging into it they had 4 career back-ups Calvin Throckmorton, Josh Andrews, Landon Young, and Lewis Kidd starting several games.
Ramzcyk's decline started and he missed a bunch of practice time.
1st rd pick LT Penning gets hurt in preseason and misses most of season causing James Hurst be LT.
Caesar Ruiz finally had a pretty good year, does Marrone get credit for that?
McCoy was best lineman.

2023=Fox Sports ranked them 14th. Eye ball test says they were worse than that, but metric wise it says 14th. They still sucked at run blocking all season. Absolutely struggled first 6 games in picking up blitzes/stunts in pass coverage, though they did improve. Again Pete Carmichael is our playcaller.
Ramzyck's decline was real.
Ruiz & McCoy still best performers
Throckmorton is serviceable but probably not starter material
Penning was horrible and was benched. This is the real question mark I have for Marrone. Is Penning just that bad? Did he get in his own head after struggling first couple of games and then getting benched that he looked so absolutely horrible as 6th OL in jumbo that he ended up getting replaced for that role as well? Did Marrone or anyone not see that kind of struggle in training camp & preseason? No beat writers reported that kind of noticeable struggles in camp either, so that makes me think he got in his own head & lost confidence after initial struggles. He definitely should not be counted on as starting at any position in 2024 but still should be given a fair chance to compete.
Enter Andrus Peat, he certainly exceeded everyone's expectations at LT, does Marrone get credit for that?

TL;DR
2022 & 2023 run game has sucked aside from Taysom's QB runs. Is that Marrone's fault, injuries on o-line, or Carmichael's ineffective playcalling?

2023 OL struggled mightily early on with blitz/stunt pick-ups, though they improved after about week 6. Was this Marrone's fault for lack of preparation, or was execution and lack of communication amongst the personnel?

agree that marrone did a solid job.

peat is actually a decent LT. will probably be better next year and still our best option. better at tackle than he was at guard. was an all-everything LT in high school and college.

my two biggest questions are saldiveri and ramzyck. can saldiveri take the LG or RT spot? those are the two spots we need to fill.

He does have a history with the club & Mickey for sure. Marrone is a bit of an enigma though if you look at his coaching career. He's had very good success as OC & OL coach. He's had success as collegiate HC & NFL HC, but cannot seem to sustain it, there are bad down years mixed in with his winning seasons

2006-2008: Saints OC & OL coach. Sure Payton called the plays but the offense was great & OL was damn good!

Syracuse HC
2009: Only 4 wins, but was one more than previous season
2010: 8 wins & won bowl game
2011: Sucked. Started 5-2, finished 5-7. I don't remember what went into nor did I read up on it.
2012: 8-5, in 4-way tie for Big East title. Won bowl

Bills HC
2013: 6-10
2014: 9-7, Bills first winning season in 10 years, but missed playoffs. Marrone quit executing an Opt-Out Clause in his contract due to change of ownership

Jaguars
2015: Assistant HC / OL coach
2016: Named Interim HC after Wk-15, went 1-1. (Team 3-13)
2017: Named HC, went 10-6, first winning season in 10 years. Won AFC South, beat Bills in Wild Card rd & Steelers in divisional round before losing 24-20 to Patriots in AFC championship
2018: 5-11, missed playoffs
2019: 6-10, missed playoffs.
2020: 1-15, fired after season (25-44 overall HC record)

2021: Alabama OL coach, they lost to Georgia in National Championship. OL was good, but they always have been since Saban has been there

2022-2023: Saints OL coach. OL finished ranked 28th & 14th respectively.

Beats me. Marrone might’ve been the single worse position coach Saban ever had at Alabama. It was stunning when the Saints hired him to begin with.

I agree, and that's assuming we retain Peat at LT, but we have to re-sign him.
Average starting LT salary is $8.9M and Peat is on a terrible contract right now.

Per Over The Cap
2024 is a void year, his cap hit is $7.3M and his dead cap is $13.6M.
2025 is a void year, his cap hit is $2.7M and his dead cap is $6.2M
2026 is a void year, his cap hit is $2.7M and his dead cap is $3.5M
2027 is a void year, his cap hit is $800k and his dead cap is $800k

No but it’s certainly his job to develop the young O-linemen.

And who said Marrones job was safe? Just because he didn’t get whacked by DA don’t mean the next OC won’t have a guy he prefers coaching the O-line.

Loomis said himself the “We as a staff failed Penning. Failed to develop him and we have to do a better job going forward to develop him whatever that takes. And we will do that in 2024.”

Ruiz’ play was credited by Ruiz himself by working with Jahri Evans. Penning is a bust if they can’t put him at tackle. He’s not a guard and never will be with his feet. Maybe he makes a leap and actually earns a spot but if they don’t bring Peat back to play LT which i admit he was better at than LG. I’ll be shocked if we see Ram play again unfortunately.

Saints graded as the 23rd best OL per PFF. With the capital invested there, they need to be top half of the league, at minimum

That said they had the 5th best pass blocking efficiency over the last 7 weeks. That happens to coincide with Carr’s ascension to average QB play. So maybe there is a small glimmer of hope there

That’s not saying much, because Ruiz was pretty damn bad
