I have been reading this board a lot lately so if this has already been asked don't spit too much venom my way.

Anyway how do you stop Peyton Manning? (or slow him down) We talk about it, but specifically how do you attempt to do it? Formations? I'm no idiot. I know he's a machine and a Hall of Famer, but he does have flaws. How do you do it?

New England had his number for a while. From 2001 to 2005 they lost 6 straight to NE. Yes, some of those games where in Foxboro and being in the snow does affect your game. Still unlike anyone else Belichek had his number. What did NE do?

Apparently he can't be stopped, you can only hope to jerk him off along the way.

same thing we did to the Patriots - cover the recievers well, and take away the checkdown guy (Collie - who is basically the Colts Welker).

Actually, he's already been stopped and doesn't know it yet.

They jammed their receivers at the line and kept jamming them. Recently, the NFL starting enforcing DB contact more strictly, thus allowing greater precision for Manning on timing routes. That's when Manning's career really took off and he was able to overcome his playoff/Patriots demons.

In spite of the enforcement of the contact rule, the 5 yard jam is still legal and the best way to counteract Manning's prowess. See Colts game vs San Francisco.

0-6-5 defense. Just drop back and see if he can find anybody. If they run the ball, it'll take awhile. Wouldn't that be funny when he comes to the line of scrimmage.

Multiiple schemes and looks. I think you gotta change it up even if it's working to stay one step ahead. Pressure is always key. We may not get to him like we did Favre and Warner but, we can hurry him up and throw off his timing.

You don't stop him completely. You just have to capitalize on the mistakes when he makes them, and don't try and throw the same thing at him too often. He'll read it, and make you eat it.

Same holds true for our man Brees, though. Two great QBs, but the media is WAY over the top for Manning. Brees will get his love when he gets his ring.

Run The Goddamn Ball!!!

2006 (Colt's last Superbowl season) the god that is Peyton Manning threw it 50 times for over 300 yards. He threw one pick and was sacked only once. He had two receivers with 100+ yds. They couldn't run for shite. The great Dwight Freeney's ankle was 100%...

...and they got their asses whipped. The Jaguars ran the ball all over that arse. Second highest rushing total since the merger.

I think if SP is patient and doesn't abandon the run he can come close to doing the same.

I remember someone (maybe in the media) saying that the new illegal contact rule came about when the Colts complained to the NFL that the Patriots were hitting their receivers down field. I think it's either a dumb rule, or the officials do a piss-poor job of enforcing it, because I see the wide receiver initiate the contact more often than not, but the defender's the one getting flagged. It's only a 5 yard penalty, but it comes with an automatic first down. I think they need to do away with the automatic first down this offseason.

Every time the Media has gone over the top about a Saints opponent and not given the Saints a chance to win, the Saints have come out and whipped that team's arse... This year's Saints carry a rather large chip on their shoulder, and unlike the Jets who seem to have a chip on their shoulder, our Saints let their play do the talking, and I expect a lot of screaming being done Sunday - WHO DAT?!

This sounds pretty good to me. Keeping him off the field and scoring while we do it. Miami kept Manning off the field for 45 minutes and he still beat them. We need to score on practically every possession we have.

Give him multiple (like 3 or 4) looks on each play.

If the defense is set and Peyton starts pointing people out and checking down like he always does, just reposition the defense (mainly linebackers and safeties) again while he makes the audible and as the time clock winds down.

the Jets and Ravens both shut him down in the 1st half, but couldn't do anything on O. We need to keep him off the field and do what we do best on offense (score)

I think we also need to disguise our blitzes better. I heard something the other day about how the receivers are coached to run to the areas that the blitzing players vacate. Manning looks for them to do that and it's very effective. If you've got 8 or 9 at the line, drop some back to confuse them.
