That being said they definitely need at least 1 guard. Lelito is decent but Kelemente is a backup at best..wouldn't surprise me at all if they went with Conklin or moved down for cody whitehair tbh

as much as i'd like to get an immediate impact defensive player, i still am of the opinion that there is not a position on the field that we can't improve in this draft... they really can't do any wrong, no matter which direction it is.... LB, DE, T, G, WR, QB, CB, S... whoever is highest rated at any position is who we should draft... period...

of course, i believe we should try to accumulate some pics by trading down, then drafting BPA

Never a bad idea to improve you line. While I feel like D-line and linebacker are bigger positions of need, if the organization feels like they can get their guy in those spots in the 2ns and 3rd rounds, grabbing an all-american in the trenches is rarely a bad move, imo. Flashy qbs, dbs, and wrs may sell tickets, but chanpionships are won in the trenches. The best teams always build their squads around having dominant offensive and defensive lines.

Wouldn't be that against Conklin at 12. It fills a need and he could very well be BPA, depending on how the chips fall. I thought last year that Peat was a horrible choice at 13. Jury is still out on him though. Just hoping and praying he can at least beat out Strief this offseason for that RT spot. If he can, it would be hard to call him a bust in only his 2nd season. He also came out early so is pretty young still as well. If he came around and we did draft one of these guards, assuming we come to an extension with Unger before next offseason, our line would be solidified for the remainder of Brees' tenure with the team. Could be one of the most dominant in the league by the time he rides off into the sunset as well, which would only benefit his successor.

Somebody should bump the draft thread from last year after he was drafted.

I think people are assuming we'll draft an o lineman to play guard. I think that's backwards. I think Peat was so bad at tackle, they're forced to play him inside. They'd be looking for someone like Conklin to play RT and keep Peat inside.

I'm down with that 100%.

He played better at both tackle positions than at guard tbh. They played him inside because they had injuries there that forced him to slide in. He's a right tackle in the NFL. Looks a lot more comfortable on the edge and in pass protection at that position.

For coming into the offseason late, I thought Peat looked pretty solid at tackle as the season went on. I'm confident in him to be the anchor at RT for many years.

I wouldn't be upset with Conklin at 12. Armstead-Conklin-Unger-?-Peat is a good, young group at OL.

This whole meme that Peat was terrible at tackle is all based on the first week of TC, when it was widely reported how bad he was. He never shook the perception, even though he played mostly fine at T during the actual season.

While we're talking about guards, when is Joshua Garnett, G out of Stanford, projected to go? I would like him. And if he would fall round two or three, that would let us address G AND still go DL (or other BPA) first round.

"Highly qualified scout?" What kind of BS is that.

I'm sure a lot of posters here would qualify themselves as a "highly qualified draft analyst".

If there is no DL/LB whom the Saints really love available at 12, then I'd have no problem with them taking a OL. They could stand to improve the OL anyway. I'd rather take someone at a lesser position of need who you truly believe can be an all pro rather than a guy at a greater position of need who you are unsure of.

Idk about highly qualified, but I've been saying for a while we should take an OT, but only if it's Stanley.

Is Conklin definitely gonna be a guard in the NFL?

Evidently he has the tools to play G or RT. Scouts seem to think he can be a nasty Guard, some questions if he were to play RT. Comparison made to Zack Martin.

I think if guys like Jack, Rankins, Floyd and Bosa are gone, Conklin makes absolute sense. Loomis & Payton often skip their biggest need if a guy they like isn't there for a stronger prospect at another position. I still feel like Jarran Reed will be the pick but I could easily see us taking Conklin.

If this happens, it's:

A) An admission they spent a mid-first round pick last year on a guard. Or...

B) They're spending a mid-first round pick this year on a guard

Guards shouldn't be taken that high.

Picking Conklin is a home run because he will start at RT from day one. Then you can move Peat to either RG or LG. Not only should they Conklin at 12, but they should draft Vadal with the 3rd round pick as well.
