I peaked in on the Falcons message board after the game.
They had a 17-page thread covering the game.

Man, they were so mad at what they were seeing, they started to whine about the Gleason statue coverage.
They said they wanted to bury it in shite.

I'm telling you, classiest fans in the league.

Gleason, get better and get back to your family life.
Try and stay out of the hospital as long as you can.
We're all thinking about you.

Can someone give me a quick summary of what this guy means to the Saints organization, fans, and players? I'm kind of clueless on it all. He seems really important from what I can tell. Thanks.

Here, this gives a good summary.
This is the piece they ran before the most recent superbowl.

Wow, thanks for that. I had no idea. Got major chills at the beginning and teared up towards the end.

Gleason is just an all around great guy, which is why he was such a fan favorite before all of this. Always the last guy to leave the airport when the fans went out to greet the team in the middle of the night, heavily involved in the community, lots of charity work. Just a really cool, humble guy. Damn shame that this happened to him.

eta: A lot of people knew him really well because he lived uptown and was always walking all over the place and super friendly. He was more accessible than any of the other Saints players

Wow. Thanks so much for that link. What an inspiration Steve is.

When his wife spoke about him possibly losing his voice, I teared up.

Their baby is BEAUTIFUL and good for them for not letting that horrible disease rule everything in their lives.

It takes a really special person to have a diagnosis like that not ruin them and to instead use it as an opportunity to help others and inspire people.

I don't have many heroes, but Steve Gleason definitely is one of my heroes now.

I only pray that if I were ever faced with such a horrible situation that I would have half the strength, grace, and courage that Steve and his wife have.

Get well soon, Steve!

Steve was out at Gleason Gras all day yesterday wearing shorts and a t-shirt in the cold rain. He was having a blast out there but hopefully this is a wake up call to his camp that he needs to stay warm and out of situations like that.

Freakin' trooper right there.

I actually met Steve briefly after that Atlanta game...

The night of "the block" I was bartending at Johnny Whites on Bourbon at Orleans so that the girl who usually worked that shift could go to the game. We had all kinds of media in the bar with cameras rolling because White's was the bar that never closed during Katrina. My shift was over at midnight and stuck I stuck around to tip a glass. Had to have been around 1am and there was talk of various players out in the FQ that night. Steve and Mark Simoneau popped their heads in to see what all the fuss was about... Stayed for a couple rounds of shots and general merriment before moving on to the next place to hang with more locals.

He may not be from New Orleans... but he's New Orleans through and through. Up there with Brees in the pantheon of favorite adopted sons of the city.

he had shorts on, but definitely had a rain jacket on most of the time. also had a blanket over his legs

im guessing being around all those people with the temperature changing could have led him to be sick. Not sure what shape his immune system is in. but i assume its not what it was.

It's not uncommon for ALS patients to get pneumonia.
