First 3 quarters v the 4th Quarter and what the Saints can learn from it

It can't be ignored that the Saints got their absolute asses kicked for 3 quarters and looked like total dogshit, got blown up on both lines, and Marcus Mariota looking like Lamar Jackson out there. Jameis had like 56 yards passing at that point.
What was the difference? Was it simply that they finally played with tempo (which they did switch tempos)? Was it a sense of urgency? Being forced to open up the Offense? Or is it just that the Falcons will Falcons?
What do you hope the Saints take from the way they played in the 4th vs the way they played the rest of the game?

I'm hoping it was as simple as the oline finally gelled. They hadn't played together in a long time... injuries last year. Really think we made a mistake by not playing starters more in preseason; glad it didn't bite us yesterday

It’s fairly simple, it all boiled down to the trenches on both sides. It’s a game of adjustments - we adjusted (per usual) and the tides turned rather quickly

Ruiz is going to be a problem all year.
I honestly think they were going to move hurst inside and play penning at lt.

With penning's injury, not sure how much of an option he'll be for a while. This injury slammed the brakes on his development

I think the tempo helped, but jameis getting on the same page and trusting Landry / Olave & Thomas was massive, especially Landry and Thomas. In the first half it looked like the only person he was on the same page with was juwan Johnson.

Art Smith and Dean Pees are two good coaches over on the other sideline too. Best we’ve seen in ATL. Gotta give them credit, they had an inferior roster playing hard and in position to win.
Mariota and Patterson will give team fits in spurts. But Werner practically erased Pitts and we made the other guys beat us. Credit to our gameplan

Those two are really good coaches that have been running those systems forever.
I do think the saints had a down game against the run.

Can they teach Penning to play RG? Ruiz was less than steller.
But first game is on tape now and I hope it helps going forward.

I think Hurst was the worst OL on the field yesterday. I know Peat and Ruiz are the ST whipping boys and all. There was one play where Peat moved over to help Hurst and the defender still came inside and sacked Winston.

Hurst has had a foot since middle of august. He looked fat and out of shape. Missed valuable practice and preseason reps
He played at a high level in pass pro last season on a large number of snaps. We will see how he looks as he rounds into shape

I think the bigger issue/variable is a Doug Marrone-coached OL. They made significant 2nd half adjustments to the pressure packages and Jameis was allowed time to do stuff. Jameis is always going to have issues with trying to do too much, but he couldn't even drop back without pressure. Hell, many times it was immediate, untouched pressure (which is purely on our OL reads/assignments)

OL started playing well, but Atl stopped sending in extra blitzers to break up the oline gameplan. If you recall, he had that one incomplete on the second TD drive due to a blitz. I think that was the only time they sent someone other than the Dline at Winston.
Also don't think Atl ran any stunts in the last 3 drives. They were very conservative with their pass rush
And, Winston & MT finally starter to heat up. If/when they get on the same page, that can be a very deadly combo.
