Falcons/Saints Rivalry

First of all, congrats to all you Saints fans out there... it must be really exciting to be in those black and gold shoes right now.
Onto my point...
Born and raised here in Altanta, I grew up hating the Saints as they're the Falcon's arch rival. That being said, I'm frickin shocked at many people here in Atlanta (sports radio personalities and my personal friends) are rooting for the Saint in the SB.
Why do you think this is?
1) Sort of a sympathy thing, or fell good story (Katrina & NOLA),
2) A "Southern" thing being that they're playing a northern team from Indy
3) The rivalry just isn't that compeling
4) Atlanta is full of carpetbaggers that don't care about the Falcons, and the "die hard" fans are few and far between.
For the record, I'm pulling for Indy... sorry folks. However, if the Saints do win, I'll be very happy for you guys and the state of LA...

I definitely didn't root for the Falcons against the Broncos and don't expect the Falcons to be cheering for us against the Colts.
I am actually shocked that you say people in the ATL are pulling for us.
I need to go take a shower.

I pulled for Atlanta in SB and in playoffs when saints aren't there (i.e., usually). Definitely a Southern/Divisional/NFC thing. Plus, there is more of a connection between Atlanta and New Orleans now that pre-Katrina, due to all the refugees here.
I go to the game every year here in atl, and it's always a fun rivalry. That's the Southern way. We aren't Eagles, Patriots, Steelers, or Jets types. When we hate you, we invite you in for dinner and drink; shake your hand and smile and talk about our mommas and dem.

You are contridicting yourself.

I Live in Atlanta, but I feel like not a lot of people here are rooting for the Saints. Not really the fans of Falcons even though they casually "root" for them are the ones...even though pretty much all falcon fans are like that.

Plus if we win it makes the NFC south look tougher. Its the Same reason I cheer for SEC teams that I hate in the NC game.
I went to the Superbowl you guys played in, and always had respect for the city.
Plus we must continue the war against northern aggression, right.

this is only partially true. There are plenty of diehard fans here . A lot of them are black, and that aspect of the rivalry at games is always fun. i always jump in the middle of it too. fun stuff.

I rootED FOR TAMPA an Carolina in the superbowl.
Not too many teams from the south win it all. Tampa, Miami. Maybe you could consider dallas, but i dont.

The Black people at Falcons games are funny, but they're not really die hards. They're just there because it's a social event and an excuse to have fun and be loud.

I hate the Saints, but do have a little compassion for the situation down there. If it were pre-Katrina then I would've have given 2 shits about N.O. or it's people.

they didn't sell out the World Series. What do you think?

The rivalry isn't very compelling because I just don't see many Falcons fans who put the effort into caring enough for a rivalry to really heat up.
It's sad, because I don't really feel that the Saints have a true rival... just a few teams that the fanbase really tends to hate.

the saints/falcons rivalry doesn't compare to our old rivalry with the niners.

4 would be my opinion having lived there for 3 1/2 years. also, of the native georgians i knew there, very few were falcons fans, and many of them were only "fans" when their fans were winning. fair-weather fans in every sense of the phrase.

Atlanta has a ton of transplants from Louisiana now. I think the rivalry is still compeling, but theres also alot of Louisiana people in your neck of the woods too.
