The #Saints are restructuring QB Derek Carr’s contract for salary cap purposes, a move expected to save the club around $23M in cap relief, per sources. Carr is due $30M in base salary, so converting a portion of that into a signing bonus can provide immediate savings

We all knew this was coming, but damn Loomis has really gotten us into a mess with the cap. It's all good when you're a contender, but three straight years of no playoffs would get any GM fired with this situation.

Will be a lot of melting about this, but at the same time EVERYONE knew it was happening.

I wonder if this restructure also included an extension (probably not or they would have stated), a total salary reduction (again, probably not), or more guarantees in the future because why not since we will never be able to walk away from it anyway

He’ll never accept a total salary reduction. That’s crazy to consider. He’s going to restructure is all. Well be paying him for a few years after he’s cut.

Isn't "temporary relief" more accurate?

Not a shocker. If Carr and the offence under performs it will be the ol..."they were learning a new system and showed promise going into next year" trope

I think it's too early in the contract, but I would not say never. Players have done it in exchange for more guarantees, to be able to get released/traded (not relevant here), or for more money/bonus upfront.

This appears will always be the case for any FA signing, or player getting their 2nd contract with the Saints.

saints talk on Loomis and the cap

quote:

Jerry : How are we going to get under the cap?

Kramer : It's just a restructure for them .

Jerry : How is it a restructure ?

Kramer : They just restructure .

Jerry : Restructure what ?

Kramer : Jerry all these teams restructure everything

Jerry : You don't even know what a restructure is

Kramer : Do you ?

Jerry : No . I don't.

Kramer : But they do and they are the ones restructuring it.

Just one more shovel full of dirt poured on the corpse of what had become a yearly contending franchise in the NFL. Those days are gone.

We all knew this was coming,

My only concern with any restructuring was whether or not the contract remained voidable after the next season, if that was indeed the case as I read.

This is what happens on the back end when you need a QB to remain a contender.

Ww#,

You keep saying things like this or “everyone knew it was going to happen”, like we should just accept fate and not advocate for change.
