I went to see DEKE once live at Hooters and he was arguing with the producer about the show. Not only that he has weight issues and he wears his clothes ten times his size to hide his bulk.

I will miss GUS!!

Well everyone has an opinion on what is good sports radio. I guess a better question JAYDEAUX should have been, what do you think makes good sports radio?

I would point to the national shows as they all seem to be on the ball. I like Hebert also. What I want is local radio that knows the local teams. I don't like Deke only due to the perception that he isn't behind the local teams. Gus knew the NFL, IMO, and wanted the best for the Saints.

i don't know why people are blaming katrina, wwl has sucked for years before katrina. sports talk=saints talk and it probably always will.

One of the biggest problems with Deke and Bobby are that they bothhave such rough accents ,it is hard to listen to both of them the whole time. Buddy D. was bad also but at least you had someone to break up the the oft times unintelligible conversation. Its like listening to two shrimpers talk over the VHF radio while you are fishing. It makes you want to change the channel for something that is easier to understand, like a Latin Mass.

Bring it, New Orleans metro is over due for a legit sports station. If you can put the signal out to hit Hammond to Bay St Louis and the Southshore you should have advertisers galore.

I think hebert is a poor man's buddy d, although buddy was well rounded in being a writer, on tv and then radio. Don't care for deke. Hokie can take or leave. I did like kenny wilkerson and kaare. I wish they would bring kaare back for the sports show. I also like garland, although he doesn't do sports.

I loved Buddy D's pickem show on Friday evenings.

He'd get some hard core bookies and oddsmakers on from all over the country and have them give their top plays of the week. It was good stuff and you got some scoop that was worth a lot of money.

from someone who was in the business, yes i do

Your right about keeping some idiot callers short

deke just keeps caller short who disagree with him, regardless of whether or not they opinion is valid

We also treat people with respect and not try and dumb them down.

depending on where your show is, it is very possible your listening audience is different from the one in new orleans

the new orleans "sports" radio market is WWL. it is all most people over the age of 50 know.

all they had for years was saints...thats it

the station that talked saints was WWL. the person on that station who talked saints was buddy d

so, for years, buddy d and WWL became the home of sports talk radio in new orleans....which is an absolute joke!

WWL has branded themslves and to veer away from that now would compromise too many of their listeners. they don't want to be a true sports talk radio station, and i can't say i blame them. they're making tons of money being a news station with a few crappy sports talk sessions

quote:

I have had Gus on my show every week for 3 years

and i'v known him since i was 11 years old

if you have had any close to the amount of conversations on wwl, deke, kenny, hoakie you would know how he feels/felt about the whole situation (before his being let go. i have not talked to him since)

i turned down an offer to do it in the south la area...does that give me enough qualifications to judge good or bad talk radio shows?

Deke on the radio = me listening to my Ipod

Chifici did great when he filled in for a week not so long ago. GKat was great at what he did.

WWL Firings I would most like to see:
1. Deke-For obvious reasons
2. Monica Pierre-She's a parrot for her cohost. Yet to add anything of substance.
3. Don Debuque-I get it. Hunting and fishing.
4. Spud-I can't stand to think about that disgusting slob. Does do a good job discussing happenings in Baton Rouge.

I can deal with Bob Del solo. Garland is OK.

Tommy Tucker and Rob Couhig should be on full time.

Best hope is Benson decides to compete w/WWL in sports market. He would destroy them.

Like I said LSUfan4444. I should have asked, "what do you think makes for good sports talk". My bad for how it came across. I think you gave some excellent answers. And i have had many conversations with Gus about this before it went down. I havent know him as long as you, but i do know him well enough that he is coming to stay up here with me and the wife and cohost the show this weekend. Thanks for the reply. I'm sure my audience is a little different from WWL but the main topic of conversation is Saints, hornets and LSU.

i really wish him the best

we were never best friends but i have known him since we were kids (baseball at the playground together etc)

every time we saw each other our conversation wuold quickly turn to sports

since i don't work out at elmwood that much any more i don't see him as often as i used to

gus is good people, so is his entire family

with his education, experience and work ethic he'll land a good gig somewhere..i'm sure of it

i really, REALLY wish there was a big enough market and enough sponsorship money to support a true sports talk radio show in new orleans

fact is advertising money is tight in this community and people want to go with the big dog for the most listeners

990 and 1280 each got their share, but i'm afraid until wwl loses the contract with the saints and benson starts his own gig with fox radio, WWL will have no competition and thus no reason to put on a true sports format

speaking of fox, and sports talk radio, "you know what i'm so done with?"...."fox morning sports radio"

am i the only one who finds it horrible?

yes.

i was listening to Fox on the way on from Houston on my XM, and they were talking about the draft, and they couldnt even pronounce the players names.

they were talking draft, and about Crabtree, and the guy was like "Graham Ha-ha-ha Hairel or however you say it"

and when they used to come on 1280 in the morning, teh guys tried to turn it into a comedy show and they just fricking sucked. Craig Shemann, James Washington, and those douches

yeah, they're terrible

but before i got XM it was either that or mike and mike and that hasn't been a good sports show in quite a while either

now, its bill king on the way to work every morning and wwl when he is at commercial

and back to wwl bashing

look at their logo

news*talk*, THEN sports

even on their commercials they say, "the news, talk and sports leader"

look at this link from their site...when talking "about us" they list and discuss news, talk, traffic and weather all before sports and it shows in their product

Not me - I am so sick of listening to that phony slapdick plug air conditioning companies, vinyl window companies, house leveling companies, mattress companies...on and on.

Tommy Tucker is infinitely more interesting than the morning schmucks on WWL...but that's probably no coincidence. Usually radio at night tends to have quite a lot more intelligence - in its hosts and callers.
