I think they are different players. Bain is Wayne Martin and Bailey is Pat Swilling.

And again, Bain didn’t have consistent production during the year with most of his stats in the postseason. That raises questions for me.

"we simply can't have a John Sullivan type of top 10 bust when we're trying to build this thing out early in the process. Get someone we know is going to be productive at that spot"

I wholly agree and, within reason, I don't care which position. Just pick the best player with the lowest bust factor so that you are sure as you can be that the roster gets significantly better with the signing. I say "within reason" because you would like a higher-value position at #8, but we have needs at edge, WR, CB, and LB,. Find the best, safest one and make him a Saint.

The fact that he didn’t participate in anything at the combine (when there are all of these questions) doesn’t bode well.

Bain will workout at his pro day. There are questions that need answering but I wouldn’t ding him for not doing the combine. We see this every year with guys who make deep postseason runs who want to let their ailments heal

I think Bailey has bust potential also.

The player you are describing would be Downs.

Every player from the draft has the potential to be a bust; it's a risk organization must take.

I’ve come around on Bain. And I think it could be likely he makes it to us since the Commanders just spent pretty big on Edge in FA

I don't think we can risk an outlier player in the top 10

The people suggesting that we pick Bain clearly have not followed Mickey's drafts very closely. It is extremely rare for him to draft someone without prototypical measurements high in the draft. The last 3 edge rushers that we drafted with high round picks were Foskey, Turner, and Davenport.

Foskey: 6'5 280 34' arms
Turner: 6'6 270 35' arms
Davenport: 6'6 265 33 5/8' arma
Bain: 6'2 263 30 7/8 inch arms

I get that we are running a different style of defense now but I don't see Mickey deviating from his philosophy for Bain.

Bain’s play style is very similar to Cam Jordan’s. Just with shorter arms.

And height and size. And possibly athleticism since Bain didn't work out at the combine. Cam is underappreciated for his athleticism for his size.

That was a different coaching staff. Loomis and Ireland have already talked about how Staley’s scheme allows them to take a wider net of players.

At this point you either like Bain or you don’t. I’d be more than fine with him as a Saint. He’s going to be a good player. Elite? Depends on if the length is an actual issue or not. If the Saints think it will, then they’ll probably take Downs or Delane

I didn’t say pick a player that has NO CHANCE at being a bust. I said Bain has a HIGHER CHANCE at being a bust.

In the top 10, you want the highest upside with the lowest chance to bust…..or safest highly rated player

Yes a wider net of players such as smaller speed rushers which is not Bain. There is a difference between a player’s archetype and a player’s measurements. Bain is a power rusher with short arms. Mickey has said before he tries to avoid outliers, which Bain is, in early rounds.

He's violent, relentless, stout on run defense, a great high character lockerroom guy, i think his style of play hides his physical trait weaknesses well. you can't coach heart and effort.
