Does that matter tho bunch

This is what my gut is telling

-Saints aren’t being hamstrung & still having to pay him. He’s “retired”. They aren’t eating money. They have all the leverage

- how comfortable is Payton? Is he pushing to get back into coaching, or will he just sit back & let the teams handle it, with his soft, cush , media job to fall back on

- so it comes down to Dallas’ desperation, coming up with a compensation package of the saints liking, and also very likely giving Payton a new deal making him the highest paid coach in the league. And who else gets involved? Perhaps the Jets, the bengals, or commanders. Whomever. Could push the price up

This is 100% accurate.

The only unknown is how soft/weak are the people in the Saints Organization who make these decisions.

The Ceedy trade tells me that they don't understand value. Their movements within the draft tell me they don't understand value.

That's why I'm not confident. At minimum the Saints should be demanding 2 #1s from Dallas. If Dallas decides to go another direction then, sure, maybe you lower your price for the next team that comes along.

But, there's zero reason to lower the price for Dallas.

I'd make an offer this morning for a #1 and Parsons for rights to Payton and Dalton. :)

If they say no (of course they will) I'd counter for 2 #1s.

...only on the Saints side. The Saints hold the cards and are the ones deciding what it's going to take. The only risk the Saints have is NOT getting compensation for Payton.

Dallas is done with McCarthy. Everyone knows it. If Payton were smart, he'd start having his name floated for other jobs...to raise his value for Dallas and to make the need immediate. He'll be the highest paid coach for sure. It might be obscene with where Dallas is.

One thing people also have to factor in is that CSP will not want to have his new situation hamstrung by a trade wherein the team he's going to has given away ridiculous compensation.

He has some level of leverage where he can say stay retired for another few years and the Saints get nothing after his contract is up.

Now...if he's going to a team like the Chargers where they already have a future elite QB and a pretty loaded roster...he might not see the team giving up a lot for him as much of a hinderance.

He’s got a shite media job.

He’s basically on the practice squad in his current job.

He sure didn’t look comfortable on tv.

I don’t think he is going anywhere that has an unsettled QB.

The compensation stuff he has no control of. This is a bed that he made, he knew the ramifications. He’s also cocky enough to not GAF about that.

That's why I keep bringing up the Chargers. If they go 8-9 this year...

I could see them wanting him and I could see Payton taking that job over Dallas in an instant.

The wildcard would be would Payton want the Cardinals job and to coach Kyler. Hearing about Kyler's film watching habits makes me think no way

This comment tells me you don’t understand value. If Ceedy was happy and not creating absolute chaos then you can absolutely get more for him. When the guy is blowing up in practice throwing tantrums you get the guy out of there for whatever you can get.

They couldn’t have done this during the draft because he hasn’t become a cancer yet.

I think Sean would much rather coach at the chargers too. Elite young QB. Stacked roster. Plus not dealing with Jerry. People really underestimate how much working for Jerry has an impact on coaches. There is a reason he never gets a good coach. Good coaches don’t want to work for Jerry.

Most wins in franchise history and Super Bowl says otherwise. Look I don't like it, but that's not gonna be how this thing goes down.

They're going to use it as a chance to be magnanimous as an organization and go along with it. Jerry will give them something, but it ain't gonna be even close to what most think or want.

eta - I do agree that SD is a big sleeper if it comes available, but I can not see Staley getting fired in 2nd year.

I think your off. And I don’t pump sunshine. The saints will be fairly compensated. This isn’t some type of retirement remorse on the side of Payton.

The day he stepped down, everyone knew this would all eventually come to a head. He isn’t in position to gain sympathy.

He was just on Cowherd for 30 minutes and talked NFL but didn't say one word about the Cowboys. A very suspicious omission since their QB is hurt with a similar injury to what he had to deal with just a couple of years ago.

Guess we shall see - Nothing you said here I disagree with except that "Im off". Saints are going to try and move on and dont want it hanging over them, same as they did with CGJ.

If you ignore the millions he's giving up in the meantime. I mean, you are probably looking at a 17-20M/yr offer from Dallas.

He's not leaving that on the table because he doesn't have two #1s.

disagree

We gave away a true difference maker for basically nothing. That's a huge mistake.

Historically, the Chargers are a cheap franchise.

Besides Dallas being Dallas, and all of Payton's connections to Dallas, there has never been a better time to negotiate with Dallas. They absolutely NEED a big hire. They are going to pay #1 money, IMO.

Payton bombed all his tv interviews. He will for sure be coaching next season.
