Dabo Swinney says Bryan Bresee 'could be a Pro Bowler for years to come' with Saints

Who better to talk about the New Orleans Saints’ first-round pick than the man who’s been coaching him for three years? Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney is a big fan of his former defensive tackle Bryan Bresee, who the Saints selected with the 29th pick in the 2023 NFL draft on Thursday night.
Swinney says Bresee is a star in the making, telling local reporters in South Carolina, “Bryan is a guy that could be a Pro Bowler for years to come. He has that in him. And I’m just excited for the Saints because his best football is in front of him. He’s really gotten himself healthy, but this kid has been through so much. He had a great freshman year, missed his second year, got hurt, tore his ACL, and then he comes back and obviously his sister passing, he missed a lot of time and then he had a kidney issue. When this guy is on the field, everybody in the stadium notices.”
Bresee was a coveted five-star recruit coming out of high school, and he was on Swinney’s radar for a long time. He continued, “I mean, that’s just who he is, and he’s been that way at every level of football of his life from pee wee to middle school to high school to college. It won’t be any different in the pros; when he’s on the field, everybody will notice him. And the good news for him is, again, he is a high-value, first-round type talent that was available just based on where he is in his development.”
So he’s pretty confident of Bresee’s odds of working out in the pros. But Swinney knows as well as anyone that it takes more than athletic ability to go the distance. And he believes Bresee’s work ethic and commitment to his craft will take him far.
“This guy is the ultimate gym rat. He absolutely loves football,” Swinney said, “He’s passionate about practice, he’s strong and he’s just a guy that I think his teammates are going to love. He’s got a great spirit to him every single day. I think if he can stay healthy, he’s got a great future in front of him as a pro football player.”
I get it that's his coach talking him up but I have read at least a dozen or more evaluations on this young man and they consistently say the same things that Swinney is saying so we shall see.

I'm not opposed to the pick. In fact I like him a lot but for me it's about exactly how Dabo phrased it."If he can stay healthy. "

Wonder if he said the same thing about Murphy? That he can be a pro bowler for years.

Exactly. He was the consensus #1 overall recruit coming out of high school and arguably did not meet that expectation. He since tore an ACL, had the kidney issue, and went thru some big time personal tragedy. He sounds like a great kid, and I hope he kills it as a Saint, but damn it seems its a bit of a risk for a team that has immediate needs.

Bingo. The saints picks that have actually panned out were guys that were highly productive before coming to the draft not these potential injury prone project guys that are a gamble.

He was clearly viewed as atleast a late 1st round talent. That is living up to expectation.

Im not arguing he isn't a first round talent. The fact is though he didn't meet expectations on the field at Clemson and of course some of that was no fault of his own (injury, death of his sister).
This has nothing to do with his draft status. I personally don't believe the pick is a reach and think he has the chance to be a steal at 29. That doesn't change the fact it is something of a risk due to the injury and the fact his best season was two years ago.

A plug and play solid immediate starter and potentially the defensive steal of the first round who stays healthy and wrecks shite for a decade. Like I said, its a risk but not a reach.

But, that's why you had the chance to draft a guy like him at 29.
You are either drafting a solid but not spectacular (on paper) guy at 29, or you a drafting a guy that is imperfect but with high upside.
It's no guarantee. People who hate risk will hate the pick. People who are comfortable with risk will love it.

I’m a fan of the pick but i also don’t put a ton of stock into what Dabo says after he’s been drafted. What else is he gonna say? Again I’m happy with the pick and think Bresee can be a stud, but we can’t really put a ton of stock into what the former coach of his says

I’d say he’s more than just high risk, he’s a virtual unknown on a roster and position we don’t need to be gambling on.
Take away “being the former #1 overall recruit “ and it’s a pretty terrible resume for a first rounder. Hope it works out but our track record here isn’t great

They took a flyer on Lattimore with his big injury in college. That panned out.

Lattimore had way more of a production resume than Bresee has.
Bresee has a good freshmen campaign, nothing, and then is getting a pass for not being fully healthy and off the field issues. He very well could be a gem that fell into our laps due to those circumstances or yet another wasted “potential” pick by our FO. If we had the eagles roster I’d say sure take that gamble, not so much with ours, a miss here will sting badly

They're kind of bizarro versions of each other. Lattimore had one great season late and Bresee had one great season early.
