If we pick him in the 2nd round, they only have 4-year contracts. With Carr looming, that would be dumb.

ah ok. i'll let loomis know. we're locked in on carr for 2 more years. that doesn't mean he theoretically can't get beat out at the end of year 2 or we start to see a different future in year 3.

I like his physical attributes for sure but wouldn't want to spend more than a 3rd on him.

to SFPs point if he doesn't play for the first 2 years but you feel good about him you could extend him early to lower the annual cost moving forward

1) Franchise QBs don’t grow on trees and are a lottery ticket.
2) A rookie QB doesn’t negate our cap woes. Even if we drafted a good rookie QB, we don’t have cap space to sign our own players or bring in big time players to put around him. We need to bite the bullet for a few years.
3) Carr’s contract and dead money isn’t coming off the books for several years. That gets you one or two years of the benefit of a rookie QB salary.
4) We have old talented players and a dearth of young talent. We need to build our base talent up a little so we can pay those guys when we get the benefit of a young rookie QB if that’s the route you want to go.

The only way to get one is to draft one

There will never be a right time. It’s going to be a gradual process and the QB is the most important part. Carr nor the old roster should not prevent you from doing this. You need to plant the seed somewhere and identify the guy

The notion of putting off getting a QB has gotten us into this mess. If it was Jayden Daniels or Caleb Williams sitting at 14 everyone would run to the podium to draft em. So if we don’t like Nix that’s fine but Derek Carr should never keep you from drafting a QB you like

I'm actually a little higher on Nix than most. Granted, most think he sucks. I think he has the potential to be a decent NFL starter one day. And he'd be a great back up.

If he goes in the first, he'll be Baker Mayfield 2.0. Good, not great, and needing 4-6 years to mature and grow into a serviceable QB.

Nope. He'll simply be relegated to the endless list of non-1st round QB's that either weren't elite/franchise level, or took a LONG time to get there (and several shots with multiple teams).

My point was that if he goes in the 1st, he'll likely end up disappointing the team that drafts him that high, like Cleveland did with Baker. 1st round equates to "potential starter" expectations. I don't think that carries over to QB's drafted in later rounds, and I don't think a team has ever drafted a QB in the 1st without expecting him to become the starter.

Personally, I don't think that Bo's history and skillset warrant a 1st-round gamble by a team. But that's just my opinion.

FYI, have to wait until they complete 3 years before you can extend/renegotiate

I don't get the hate either. He's really accurate and has played in big games against big time NFL ready players. Many said Drew Brees couldn't throw the deep ball. Look how his career turned out. Whomever drafts him, will get a steal.

Bo Nix? Methinks he has yet another year to play, in transfer portal. Auburn has shown interest.
