What are the chances he'll fall to 27th, though?

Assuming we don't trade up, of course

I hope we don't waste a 1st round pick on a qb. We need someone who will contribute immediately.

I'm thinking a WR or DL, but I honestly would be a fan of picking Baker. We're going to need something after Brees and soon. I'm not that old, but I'm definitely old enough to remember how we were before him.

I think he has a lot of potential especially sitting behind Drew for a few years but we would have to trade the whole draft to snag this guy. If we do in fact trade the draft we would be forfeiting a cheap contract potential for a great LB/SS/CB. Not to mention we would almost certainly have to pick up at least 3 of the 4 starting caliber position players at SS/LB/DE/WRorTE.

Well he's right. We're the best fit for him in the league and IMO it isn't close.

I hope that Sean is ridiculously infatuated and goes up for him. I know hella people will be salty but it will save us from purgatory post-Drew so it's worth it.

Get him. He is the most talented in the draft this year. Here’s to hoping he doesn’t go off of the rails after he gets drafted though like Johnny

How does drafting a QB help the Saints win a SUPER BOWL in the next few years (as long as Drew's window is still open)???

The 4th pick (Cleveland's second first round pick) is worth gold. I would guess they could ask two first round plus for the trade.
So I checked and the 4th pick has a value of 1800 points and the 27th pick has 680 points.

I wish people would stop making this comparison. It's dumb as shite. manziel was an addict and everyone knew it. He was drunk and blowing lines all the fricking time.

Baker is a cocky arse, but that's not a bad thing. He got drunk and ran from a cop. Hardly a glaring character issue.

Completely agree. It's a really lazy comparison. The only thing they have in common in that regard is cockiness.

Last year KC moved up from 27 to 10 (1 spot ahead of the Saints) to take Mahommes. Clearly there may have been some creedence to the rumors that Payton really liked Mahommes and out of the likely 1st round QB's in this draft Mayfield is the most like Mahommes (as opposed to Darnold, Rosen and Allen)

KC swaped first round picks with Buffalo at 10. They also gave Buffalo their 3rd rounder and THIS year's first. So the price to move up that far is steep. The Saints would almost assuredly have to do the same to get to at least the back half of the top 10.

First question -- Will Mayfield get past the top 6? Cleveland, both NY teams, Denver and Arizona seem to be the most likely take QB's. Miami might be in that mix as well. But you also have to think one of those teams is going to go after Kirk Cousins now that he will be a FA. Cleveland is already in the best position to trade with since they have two top 4 picks. If they sign Cousins it's almost assured they will trade one of the picks because they need help EVERYWHERE.

Second Question --- are the Saints willing to spend big to get him? We know NO loves to trade up. So no worries there. However, they are maybe one horrible mistake away from the Super Bowl and in the twilight of their HOF QB's career. Do you sell the future and risk one last shot at greatness? Or, do you think you are good enough now that you can sell the immediate future to secure what you think could be 10-15 years of continued great play (ala Farve to Rodgers)?

I know everyone doesn't want the Saints to burn the draft in light of the fact they have knocked it out the park on the last two. But one thing that gets overlooked is that the Saints also did a great job in free agency last season which was almost as important for the turnaround. The Saints should have some money to spend this year. If they can fill their holes via FA, maybe they can preserve that one last run with Brees AND sell this year's draft for the future in Mayfield (if you think he is a franchise QB)

I mean... maybe.... Every off-season there's five guys everyone swears is the next Drew Brees... how many have actually turned out that way?

There’s a better chance of me being drafted at 27 by the Saints, than him.

The Saints are into the time frame where they need to start preparing for life after Brees. Whether he sticks around 1 year or 2, I think Loomis and Payton are to the point where they weigh the potential options on a strategy moving forward.

The Saints could be a potential SuperBowl contender. Drafting Mayfield doesn't help that goal. But, as much as you'd like to draft an impact player that helps the playoff goals in 2018...the draft isn't a one year strategy. There are longer term implications. IF Payton likes Mayfield, is it worth taking him this year and groom him behind Brees. There are certainly some similarities in their games....learning from Brees could be beneficial.

Ultimately, I don't think Mayfield stays on the board till 27. So it becomes a matter of how much would you have to trade up to get to him. I don't think its worth mortgaging the current needs to go from 27 up to top 10 or so.
