Just added the Salary Cap numbers from OvertheCap.

A few guys that could potentially be cut in 2018 to give us some cap room...
-Fleener (8.0 mil) - 5.0 mil dead money hit (post-June 1st).
-Hill (2.833 mil) - 833 k dead money hit.
-Hooman (1.933 mil) - 333 k dead money hit. I think we end up cutting him.
-Morstead (4.85 mil) - 700 k dead money hit. I assume we pay him.
-Kikaha (1.676 ml) - 522 k dead money hit. Hopefully he recovers well, b/c it's going to be an uphill battle for him to make the team.
-Stupar (2.215 mil) - 400 k dead money hit. I think he's the odd man out if we add another LB.
-Banjo (1.8 mil) - 100 k dead money hit. I assume we cut him based on his contract. He did play good on ST's, so who knows?

These are the only type of threads I wanna see from here on out.

Edit: (not being an arse or anything; you did solid in your report), but it would cool if you added the Salary Cap numbers to the OP. Would make your post a 10/10.

Wow! A lot to comment on, GMoney2600! Nice research, too. Let me just say I agree with almost everything you suggested, give or take. That’s great, because I think we can fill those holes with another good draft and a few good FA. And with 20 guys on IR, we have a lot of options there! A good problem to have!

I think we need another DE, a Rueben Foster type LB, a safety to replace Vaccaro, a OL to replace Kelenente, A receiving weapon either WE or TE who can be a #2 threat

So, basically, we have about $8M max once Brees resigns? Unless he decides to take a pay cut to benefit the rest of the team. Something that I would think is much more likely after Sunday than it was before...

Isn't the new cap projected to be at 178 million?

If that's true we should have a bit of money to send out and backload contracts post-Brees.

Edit: Current is 167, projected IS 178. That's a potential 11 million more!

We should get relief from Fairleys contract too

We should be fricking absolved from that albatross.

I don't think Nick was malicious but damn it hurts giving someone 7 mil a year for nothing.

If drew takes anywhere from 18 to 23 million a year I will call that a huge hometown discount.

We may be able to get Ansah for ~8 million a year.
Oakafor for ~3 million a year.

We need a LB and WR/TE

Graham or Brate should get the 8 million we are giving Fleener currently.

Banjo is staying because he's huge on ST.
Hooman will get cut.
Hill will stay to backup the new starting TE.
Morestead good grief im not sure he's worth almost 5 million a year at this point.

I think we try to sign Malcolm Butler.
I think we also try to sign Jarvis.

I think both will want too much. However, if we can get one of the two, it clears the way to draft a QB or WR in the first round.

Just added that. The year next to their name is the last year on their contract.

I say keep drafting these young players and start them early. Cut the overpaid veterans(or trade), and have money to extend Brees. The younger players are hungry to make a name for themselves, too. Plus, if they succeed, you have a valuable starter(like Lattimore and Kamara) under team control for 4 years with a 5th year team option. If they walk in FA after that, you’v already drafted their replacement, hopefully. I don’t see the need to pay a Kings ransom in FA to someone just looking to cash in. They rarely work out( Brees major exception.) There are cheaper options out there(Okafor, Ginn,Klein, etc.)

Pretty much. Drafting good players & hitting on bargain free agents is the best way to build up a legit roster in a short amount of time.

These are our best contracts. Lutz, Robertson, & Te'o are the only players that aren't on rookie deals. Ginn (4.5 mil this year) didn't even make the cut...
-Alvin Kamara - 878 k
-Mike Thomas - 1.396 mil
-Andrus Peat - 3.625 mil
-Ryan Ramczyk - 2.021 mil
-Will Lutz - 630 k
-Sheldon Rankins - 3.491 mil
-Tyeler Davison - 759 k
-David Onyemata - 766 k
-Trey Hendrickson - 755 k
-Craig Robertson - 2.0 mil
-Alex Anzalone - 826 k
-Manti Te'o - 2.8 mil
-Marshon Lattimore - 3.491 mil
-Ken Crawley - 632 k
-PJ Williams - 906 k
-Marcus Williams - 1.418 mil
-Vonn Bell - 1.083 mil

We don't get off the cap hook for Fairley's contract if he has a life threatening medical issue?

Maybe a little. We're going to have to take the brunt of it though.
