re: Zion extension close to done per Shams, deal includes protections

Can’t an injury protection void the deal? A Michael Porter Jr situation could be crippling for a team. But Embiid injury protections essentially made it a not fully guaranteed deal. If Zion hurts that foot again, we could get out of five years of darkness.

Right, and I think you'd have a tough time having a player like Zion actually sign a deal like that.

A Zion deal with an Embiid structure still guarantees a lot of money. Cut him after the 1st year and you’d still guarantee about $100 million. Taking out 1st year salary and you’d still be on the hook for roughly $70 million after cutting him.

By not signing, Zion would have to bypass $200 +million and play out an entire season, risking injury and never seeing that money. There are lots of reasons for Zion to sign.
Reminder on Embiid:
Extension assumes $101 million cap for 2018-19
If misses 25+ games or plays fewer than 1,650 minutes due to injury (back, feet) PHI has right to waive and reduce g'teed amount:
$84.2 million if waived after 2018-19
$98.2 million if waived after 2019-20
$113.3 million if waived after 2020-21
$129.4 million if waived after 2021-22
If plays 1,650 minutes three consecutive seasons or three of four season (including 2017-18) lose right to waive with savings
If reaches 1st Team All-NBA or NBA MVP would be elgible for 30% max [not elligible, 2017-18 All-NBA 2nd Team]
Contract specifics via Adrian Wojnarowski and Bobby Marks of ESPN

I know what the Embiid contract is, I think he would sign something like that.
I don't think he would sign a contract that voided based upon injury though.

It’s not just injury, more about pre existing injury. The foot in particular I am sure. If Zion misses most of the contract due to that same foot, I don’t think anyone should be surprised if all the money doesn’t guarantee.

Sure seems to look ok moving on the court and with those dunks in the Local Youth Camp.
And he is also very involved with the community too.

Question- How long do we think until this extension is official?
It feels like we put this out there to signal that an extension is being worked on and is highly likely, just to quiet the national media noise about a Zion for Durant trade, or god forbid an a-hole like SAS unfoundedly saying Zion doesn’t want to be in New Orleans for the 100th time, since this extension wasn’t instantly released at midnight like some of the other ones were.
Do we think this is going to take another day, week, month to become official, official?

Everyone told you this deal would be done and announced quickly and that's exactly what happened. Why would you then pretend it had anything to do with KD?
Posted on 7/1/22 at 6:13 pm to shel311
I don't know if Griff will let this drag through the holiday weekend just to make a bigger splash when the KD stuff is done, but I'm sure KD sucking all of the air out of the room didn't pair well with Griff's planned photo op of Zion signing the extension.

I only mentioned that because Lowe and some others said we should trade Zion for KD if the extension is difficult or doesn’t happen.
So, I think we released “extension” news to quiet that notion even though the details have not been worked out injury protection wise.
The news release was more for the media so they would shut up and not get any crazy ideas. Also, the whole optics of Morant and others signing at midnight and then maybe not hearing anything about Zion’s deal for days while they iron out the details.
I’m confident in a deal Getting done. I’m just interested to see how long it takes to become “official” and how much time did that Shams tweet buy us with the media before they start saying crazy things again.

They are giving him the max for playing 82 games in 2 seasons while missing the entire 3rd season. So basically playing most of the shortened Covid season gets you a quarter of a billion over 5 years.
Deal probably done already and would not be surprised to see it announced at Essence walking out dancing on stage with an act like Janet Jackson.

If a titty with a metal shield over it pops out, he is here for five years fully guaranteed.

And if he never plays again, who cares? It’s not our money anyway, is it?
Isn’t that the right answer??

If past indications with Zion news and how hush everything stays between him and the team, I wouldn’t be surprised if the extension is already done, signed and filed with the league office, but we don’t hear about it until training camp
