New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson is nearing a five-year rookie max contract extension worth up to $231 million, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. The commitment will take Williamson’s new deal through the 2027-28 season.

Williamson said after the season ended, “I couldn’t sign it fast enough.” Indeed, the All-Star locks in commitment to New Orleans. The deal is expected to include protections that both sides were sorting through overnight and will finalize, sources said.

He has to make all nba this season to get that number, otherwise it’s 193 million I believe

Also, this should end all the talking heads talk about trading Zion for KD, he can’t be traded to the Nets, and his contract is a poison pill deal now.

A trade with the Nets was never going to happen. Most sane fans knew that lol

Doing the 5 year is interesting. I just saw that you can't have two 5 year rookie extension guys on the same team (Simmons and Bam on the Nets). So if things went sour down the road that would limit who other teams could offer us.

For instance if/when the Knicks extend Barrett they couldn't offer us a trade for Zion and keep Barrett. Right?

I'm just using that as an example. I wouldn't want Barrett on a max deal.
