Zach Lowe @ZachLowe_NBA

Lowe Post podcast: @kirkgoldsberry has news about the NBA renaming + redesigning awards --including naming the MVP for Michael Jordan. We debate: Did they get them right? What were alternate candidates for each?

Plus: @_Andrew_Lopez on the Pels + Zion-really interesting #s here on how his game has changed in the last month. What happens when BI comes back? Can they win the West as is? Is there a realistic/worth-it trade?

Pels talk starts at the 55 minute mark.

- It's mostly just well deserved gushing over the Pels.
- Lots of Larry Nance love.
- The main non gushing thing is Zach tried and can't find any worthwhile trades because the Pels are already so good and even JV isn't really upgradeable, not even with Myles Turner.

I agree that as it stands now a trade doesn’t really make sense.

The only way we are getting an “upgrade” to the 8-9 man rotation is to either give up draft capital or to trade away someone already featured in the rotation. Why give up any of those guys (except for tae)?

What bigs are out there that you could get for peanuts, is on a friendly contract AND can be called upon to give you 10-15 quality minutes a night consistently AND could be serviceable in a 25-30 minute role depending on injuries?

I can’t think of any.

I was discussing this very thing with my buddy this week. He was talking about our upcoming draft assets going to get another star piece. But really out of our starting Five who could we realistically get to improve our team?

I can understand this now. Mostly due to minutes available. Who are we gonna reduce? Dyson has legit played himself into 20min per game.

While I still feel like it would be a slight upgrade, it makes no sense to frick up chemistry for a slight upgrade at best.

I really wish Portland was sucking this year because Drew Eubanks would be a REALLY good player for this team.

We've been going round and round about this since the off season because there just isn't a realistic upgrade path with constraints like salary in place.

It does feel like we need a 3rd big that can defend and rebound. Nerlens Noel in Detroit and Javale McGee in Dallas are 2 bigs that fit that mold and aren't getting minutes. Noel is making $9 but has a team option next year. McGee is making $5.5 but has 2 more years on his deal and is 34.

I'm sure there are some under the radar guys too like someone just mentioned Eubanks.

That's the kind of move I want to see Hayes and if necessary Temple for a 3rd big.

I saw the Sam Vecenie game theory podcast and they came to the same conclusion. There isn't a trade out there worth cashing in their chips for. Not even for Turner. They like our depth and roster construction and didn't feel they needed to make a trade.

We nitpick about our holes but at the end in of the day, no one should have a problem with this squad playing out the season without a move.

There's so much youth that the potential growth is through the roof. Keep this team together as long as possible. There seriously isn't one bad apple in the bunch.

Yeah I don’t think JVal is traded. He plays out the contract and we make our move for the center we need when he’s gone. Until then, I don’t think we’re interested in moving any assets or giving up any of the guys that have gotten us here. I think we’re entirely content of improving through the draft unless it’s for a center and even then, I don’t think we’re going after an all star at that position

It is a shame that many want a backup rim protector and Hayes cannot be that. Would be nice if he could give us 10-12 minutes on defense. He just never has developed.

This. I think that is only thing they would probably be considering. A Rim protector to give you limited minutes. Jackson and Kira would be only 2 pieces I’d give up this year, as this teams makeup seems to work so well and believe Temple’s value at the end of bench is worth his limited play and cost. That all being said, not sure that player is available.

Noel would be useful. He was pretty good a couple years ago in OKC in limited mins.

What we could use is bubble Dwight Howard. A ring chasing vet on a min deal that gives good 10-15 mins when needed.

We can’t “only” give up Jax and Kira while adding another player. Jax already doesn’t count against our cap next year. We would have to trade Graham for cap reasons. Whether it’s in a separate deal or with Jax/ Kira. If we add another player Graham is gone regardless of position.

If we added another 8-12 mil player we are a tax team next year.

The only way we stay under the tax is trade/ drop Hayes, Graham, Kira, and Temple.

Keep Billy and add Matkovich, Liddell, Lotto, and a 2nd rd pick.

That would equal 15 roster spots and right under the tax.

If we are going into the tax for another player then you either use 20+ mil of those guys and say frick it going all in or you roll with the squad we have.

Bam and Ayton are by far the 2 best big piece fits/ upgrades. Other than that Myles Turner/ Wendell Carter are the only other “future upgrades” we could make but trading Val for either of those doesn’t gain us any insane amount of value right now.

Then you have Poeltl, Naz Reid, etcc that could help with depth but will push us over the tax and aren’t upgrades. That would be purely a contender depth move.

I'm not saying we should do it but it would be funny to see that come around full circle

Full circle would be him getting traded to us for pieces of the Jrue Holiday trade.

We would be pretty scary
