Don’t view it as hate, it’s just discussion.

First off, this isn’t a pussy league. It may not be the league it once was but if you don’t think games aren’t extremely physical then you haven’t been watching.

There isn’t a clear #1 pick this year, because all of these guys have major questions marks and concerns surrounding their games.

For Chet, we talked about it today, you have the intersection of thin frame and questionable feet, generally speaking. The frame will make things like finishing, boxing out, ball security, battling on the block, battling inside, etc tough for him. And while I would say for his size he moves well laterally, the game isn’t played in a vacuum and that’s something teams will still be able to attack. Offensively I think the biggest question is his assertiveness and ability to create for himself. At #1 you want a guy that can go get you a basket when you need it and I don’t really think he can do that. Ball security is an issue for him specifically in the half court (and always will be given his size and frame), his first step is just meh, etc.

I think Wembanyama is even more injury risk than Chet.

If Chet arrives to play 4 like Poku, no problem.
Honestly i like his IQ and mentality.

We're comparing Jaxson's career path to Chet's?

We saw a very similar development curve with Anthony Davis if that makes you more comfortable with accepting the fact that there aren't many starting centers in the NBA above 6'10 and below 230. It just takes a while for young, skinny players to get strong enough to not get bumped out of the way. Hell, this is the first year Brandon Ingram has been strong enough to really take contact and finish authoritatively in traffic. It's made a huge difference in his game, but it took him a while to get here.

I'm not saying Chet can't be a very good player in the league, I'm saying the Pels' roster build will make it hard for him to fully contribute until he gains that weight which typically doesn't seem to happen until say age 24. This is the NBA so you go BPA regardless, but if you have other players ranked equally and they have a better fit and path to contributing for the Pels, you take the better fit.

And Zion being able to play small ball 5 would completely change my opinion on barriers to Chet's fit. But he looked bad in that role under SVG and we haven't seen him play in a year so it's kind of hard for me to project that Zion will be able to do that.

I'm all in on Chet. We will have plenty of offense. We need more defense, to help Herb a bit on that end of the court. IMO, Chet has a solid "floor" defensively. And he might well end up being a much better offensive player that most think. Only one guy in the top 3 (or 4) draft picks has a possible "ceiling" that is head & shoulders above all the rest. That would be my man...Chet.

For reference, Kevin Durant (who looks super skinny on the court himself) is 6'10", 240lbs. Chet is 2 inches taller and weights 45 lbs less.

Let’s at least compare apples to apples. Durant was 6’9” 215# when he was drafted.

freakish potential.

We were still talking about Julian Wright's freakish potential after year 3 too.

ETA: As for this thread, Jabari Smith will have a better NBA career than Chet.

I wasn’t comparing them as draft prospects. Just players in general.

Safest player in the draft

It’s like no one watched him or even the league for that matter. Y’all wanna keep talking about him as being some center that needs to bang in the paint

Alright--not sure where this notion of the NBA being soft came from-- yes, they aren't clotheslining each other anymore, but these are still very large and very physical grown men playing center in the NBA. We had guys on here claiming Val was soft when he is up there with being one of the larger centers in the league.

Take a look below--this is the complete list of all 30 listed centers on each team depth chart. The only guy even remotely close to Chet is Christain Wood--who still would be 25lbs or so heavier than Chet. Everyone else has Chet by 40 or more pounds.

Also, let's not act like Chet is an 18yr old Freshman that will grow. Sure he's not done developing but Chet is 20yr old and hasn't grown a bit.

If Chet was a pure PF he may have a career in the NBA. But if the plan is for him to play center, which I think it is due to his foot speed, he will be a bust.

Nikola Jokic 284
Joel Embiid 280
Karl-Anthony Towns 250
Rudy Gobert 260
Bam Adebayo 255
ROBERT WILLIAMS 237
ANDRE DRUMMOND 280
MITCHELL ROBINSON 240
PASCAL SIAKAM 230
NIKOLA VUCEVIC 260
JARRETT ALLEN 243
ISAIAH STEWART 250
MYLES TURNER 250
BROOK LOPEZ 280
CLINT CAPELA 260
MASON PLUMLEE 254
KRISTAPS PORZINGIS 240
ISAIAH ROBY 230
JUSUF NURKIC 290
DRAYMOND GREEN 230
IVICA ZUBAC 240
ANTHONY DAVIS 253
DEANDRE AYTON 250
DOMANTAS SABONIS 240
DWIGHT POWELL 240
CHRISTIAN WOOD 214
XAVIER TILLMAN 245
JONAS VALANCIUNAS 265
JAKOB POELTL 246

I think Jabari with his ability to shoot it and defend with his length is far and away the safest player in this draft. Given his ceiling if Chet also had the highest floor he would be the consensus #1 pick, imo.

People forget how dominant Mutumbo was on defense. Pair that with an outside game, high IQ and you get... chet holmgren. He's a 1 of 1 and you take him in a heartbeat

Convince me how a an under 20 player who barely cracks 200lbs pounds as a 7 footer won’t turn out like Dragan Bender

Chet would be the perfect pairing with Zion. He is the no brainer #1 for the Pels.

Bender’s shooting never translated to the league kinda like how our very own Melli’s shot never translated. Bender doesn’t have the same basketball IQ nor the toughness to play against physical guys. He was soft. Chet is weak but he gets pretty physical for a string bean big. He has the mentality, but he just needs the weight to hang with the big boys. Chet’s got good touch around the basket and knows how to move in space.

If Holmgren fails, it won’t be because of his skill, it’ll be because of his weight. If he can get his weight up to 215-220 at the combine I’ll feel really optimistic about his long term projection.

Anthony Davis was 6’9.25” and 220 lbs and people were concerned about his frail frame, particularly if projecting him as a center. So Anthony Davis had 25 pounds on Chet despite being a year younger and 2 inches shorter. And the concerns weren’t unfounded for Anthony Davis. He needed a couple years to bulk up in the nba and has struggled to stay healthy.

I think the concerns about Chet’s frame are defensible.

Davis had a great frame in college. Wide arse shoulders. Chet is similar to Evan Mobley with his frame.

Yea with Davis it seemed like just a matter of time, and not if he would adequately fill out.
