I seen someone mention prime CP3, but I would take 35 year old CP3. Him or Rondo is the type of guard we need. Someone to get in these guys faces and push them to actually play to their full potential.

If we can't get that out of a player this offseason, we need a coach that will.

It's all semantics, but I agree here, we're not rebuilding, but we are building.

The foundation is set. Tweaks here and there and/or the mega trade using our assets is still on the table, but we have the foundation ready to be a solid team, and that absolutely should start next season.

You can call it whatever you want.

I'm not talking about tearing down the whole team.

I'm talking philosophy of Guard play, and if BOTH Jrue and Ball are long term fits.

You can pick one or the other and a different style of Guard next to them (which I think will eventually be the case)

Lonzo is a possibly ascending player, but there is a decent chance he gets paid WAY more than he's worth for a variety of reasons beyond his play.

You giving him Jrue money this offseason?
Yea, he's a solid, young player who you still expect to get better.

But the money is a concern. I don't see a logical Lonzo progression that makes him worth Jrue money, even though I do see him getting better, just not to that level.

Someone will throw a bag at Ball when the time comes, IMO.

FWIW, I would explore trade options for Jrue before Ball right now, just because of timelines.

The over haul is done bunch. I mean that is my opinion, but the actions of the Pelican's front office even speaks more to that.

Dont mistake that for the idea that they can no longer improve the team.

But I think you are looking at normal year to year decisions now.

Yes Ball is a big decision to make long term. But he is here, he is a good player, and if he isnt re-signed, they would hopefully use him for improve the team. That doesn't constitute a rebuild, though.

I don't think I was implying otherwise.

I'm talking about whether those guys fit together and with BI and Zion.

If one does't fit, you need to figure out which one you want to keep and what you want next to him.

That's all this discussion was about.

Long term means 3-5 years.

Right now Ingram and Zion are probably your best creators. Where they're at in their careers they aren't good enough to lead the offense, but 2 years from now will that be the case? I'm not saying you turn down a stud lead guard if a good deal comes along, but if 2 years from now we want the ball in Zion and Ingram's hands most of the time, we probably want a bunch of 3 and D guards around them, kind of like what they have now but better.

I think we need to see what this core can be with good coaching. A new coach should be the top acquisition of the offseason. Get stop gaps everywhere else for now.

Lonzo with healthy Zion

quote:

Zion made his NBA debut on Jan. 22. Since then, Ball has been playing some of the best basketball of his career, averaging 13.1 points, 8.4 assists, 7 rebounds, 1.8 steals and nearly a block per game. He shot 45.7% from the field and 43.2% from deep over that 20-game stretch.

This is a sample, but remember Ball is only 22. If Zion on is healthy, he makes sense to retain. I reckon his price may have actually softened bc of the covid.

quote:

only six players have averaged 13/7/8 or better over the course of a whole season since the turn of the millennium: Luka Doncic, Ben Simmons, LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, James Harden and Jason Kidd.

The best three-point percentage from among these six players, is 36.7% by LeBron

Only Simmons and Doncic have managed 13/7/8+ seasons under the age of 25 since the 2000-01 season.

To be honest Zo is a luxury for Zion. Zion doesn’t need Zo to put up points. I understand the reason the pairing was needed prior to the season because we didn’t know what Zion was capable of early on in his career. But knowing what we know now, Ingram and Zion is a much better tandem due to Ingram’s ability to dribble penetrate and finish in the half court set. Lonzo is limited as hell in the half court set.

Hey dumbass, why don’t you quote all the positive things I said about him?

I explained what I liked, and why I specifically don’t want him going forward.

Jrue/Ball defensive backcourt even greater and allow Zion to become more of a rover on D (which should help him out and seems to be his best projection defensively right now)

Problem is this team as is SHOULD be great defensively on paper.

Two big guards, one a DPOY capable player, a SF with size and athleticism, a huge freak athlete in Zion, and a center that played on an elite defensive team and kept that defense anchored even when Gobert was out or off the court.

MY feelings are the defensive problems are much deeper than Myles Turner.

I’m doing everything I can to keep Jrue and Zo long term, they are uniquely talented and coachable. The problems all season are turnovers, defensive intensity, and paint presence. The first two problems are coachable. We are undersized in the front court and get abused consistently and Griff/Langdon have to Fix that. Bring in Plumlee and/or Noel because scoring is not a problem. We put up 125 yesterday and still lost by double digits.
