What kind of Guard(s) do we need to take this team to the next level?

We have, in my opinion, two franchise cornerstones in BI and Zion. The SF/PF position is locked up for the next few years, with BI also being to play SG and PF in spots and Zion able to play small ball 5.

But what kind of Guard do we need next to those guys to take it the next level (by next level, I am saying consistent playoff and 2nd round playoff team)?

Do you consider Jrue Holiday and(/or) Lonzo Ball the Guards to take it to that level?

If not what kind of Guard or Guards to we need to compliment BI and Zion?

For starters, one that values every possession and doesn't turn the ball over every other possession. Also would really like one that can actually hit a 3 off the dribble

This is actually my biggest thing believe it or not. Its something that guys like Dame are just elite at, and that is what we need.

It stretches the Court. That absolute thread to pull up at anytime and drain a 3 takes guys out of the paint, and would allow BI drives and midrange, and Zion to dominate inside.

While I appreciate Jrue's elite defense, his individual elite D hasn't done us much good as a team. We need to build team defense.

I also agree, our Guards turn the ball over too damn much.

Perfect pairings for Zion and BI would be prime Klay Thompson at SG and prime Chris Paul at PG IMHO. Now I know that's not what you're asking but what I'm getting at is a 3D 2 guard and a pass first PG who takes care of the ball and makes 3's, all while being a halfway decent threat to drive are what we should be looking for. Ball has the potential to be exactly that, only issue may be is we have to start paying him big money before we know if that will be the case or not. A rich man's version of Josh Hart would be a phenomenal pairing at the 2.

Team defense is a coaching issue.

I honestly think Lonzo/Jrue is a solid starting backcourt. We just need a true 6th man to come in.

Our 2nd unit should be built around Josh Hart and the potential 6th man we bring in (Redick has maybe one year left) . Get rid of Favors and let Hayes start (work on his mid range).

Next year free agents I would like are:

Kris Dunn (6th man?!?!?!)
Brandon Knight (Prefer Dunn)
Justin Holiday (Why not!!!)
Reggie Jackson (Still prefer Dunn)
DJ Augustine (VAlue pick for 6th man) (Go Saders!!)
MCW ( Always liked him even thou he has degressed )

Tristan Thompson (Rebound King)

Rebounding and rim protection is the core of our problem

I've said this consistently but I just don't think they compliment each other that well.

Next to either one of those guys you want a very good offensive player to compliment their shortcomings. And neither are that good or consistent offensively.

I think talent is the least of our issues on this team. This team’s failures in Orlando are due to poor coaching and conditioning.

One concept I have thought about a lot is playing BI at SG, and attempting to get a tough, rugged SF that can play 3 and D next to him.

honestly, Ball/Jrue are really good next to Zion/Ingram

we need a 5 who can defend the rim and shoot to go with them...aka Myles Turner

Jrue/Ball

Zion/Ingram

Turner

that's an elite 5 (assuming Ingram stays at his place or adavnces a little more and Zion gets conditioned and develops as he should)

you have a great defensive backcourt with 2 guys who can handle and distribute. Ball and Zion seem to have amazing chemistry together as well. Jrue can score if needed and Ball is so-so from 3 (his main value is defense and distribution)

Zion and Ingram. no discussion needed

Turner's rim protection and mobility would make the Jrue/Ball defensive backcourt even greater and allow Zion to become more of a rover on D (which should help him out and seems to be his best projection defensively right now). Turner on offense can basically give Zion clear runs to the lane and gives Zion (or the middle guy Zion dishes to) another long distance shooter

Yeah I mean adding a better point guard and or big man is great but honestly if this team had better coaching that you know, emphasized defense and not turning the ball over we are probably sitting 6th or 7th in the west right now

We need a center before adding another guard.

I just don't see it, long term. I'm not convinced of the Ball/Jrue pairing.

Like I said I think either one needs a guy next to him that can just pull up from 3 and drain it consistently. That can get his shot whenever he wants. I know those guys aren't easy to find, I get it.

But that's what we need.

I agree. It would be fine if we had a center that was dominant on defense and rebounding like Gobert and provided little on offense, but Favors struggles with both and is basically useless on offense.

We can do more than one thing at the same time.

And I'm talking LONG TERM fit here, not necessarily next year.

I agree with you 100% SlowFlowPro! I would also build my bench around Hart (6th man and energy guy), Hayes (big off the bench), and NAW (scoring punch off the bench). I didn’t include JJ because he may have another year before he retires. But we definitely need a 5 that can defend the rim and shoot the 3 as our starting C.

Hayes needs a lot of work.

I’m big on his potential but he doesn’t know what he’s doing about 60% of the time.

I feel like all our guard need to be able to shoot from threeZ

Realistically only Zion and a good run protector Center can get away not stretching the floor

well i was commenting within a sense of extreme reality

if we could get Klay, then yeah he's a better option to pair with Ball than Jrue. also, a lot of those guys are shite on D. the bigger issue is my comments focused on Zion/Ingram scoring 40-55 every game. the type of guy you're talking about is going to DEMAND the chance to put up 20+. i don't think there is enough ball to go around.

The last 4 minutes of the Memphis game is what this team can do. If they let Zion be the alpha it allows BI to play off the ball. That should allow Lonzo and Jrue insane spacing. Hopefully Lonzo continues to work on the 3 and Jrue is a great 3rd scoring option

The dilemma is when they come off we need a play maker/offensive threat 6th man)

I see no problem bringing Lonzo off the bench and get a shooting 2 guard and put Jrue back on Point
