It obviously means that BI's days are numbered whether that's a trade or simply letting him go this offseason.

How do you jump to this "obvious" conclusion from this extension?
This extension has nothing to do with BI.

Come on. No chance they extend BI long term.

The financials don’t make sense that way.

It does if you move CJ.

Lets say we extend him 4/180. That puts us at 171.6mil with 10 guys next year.

Ingram - 45m
Zion - 39.5m
Murray - 31.5m
Murphy - 25m
Jones - 13.9m
Hawkins - 4.7m
Alvarado - 4.5m
Missi - 3.35m
Matkovic - 1.95m
Reeves - 1.95m

Another 1st adds another 3m, 11 guys which gives you roughly 12mil below the cap.

Your roster would be flawed without a center and a backup PF still, which I think is still the biggest question mark in this.

PG: Murray/Alvarado
SG: Jones/Hawkins/Reeves
SF: Ingram/Murphy
PF: Williamson/Murphy
C: [?]/Missi/Matkovic

They're not paying the kid 112 mil to come off the bench.

45 million a year is not on the table for BI, if it were he would’ve signed it a long time ago. Pels are offering around 35 million if you read between the lines on all the reports

It would be a terrible allocation of resources, they are too similar of players

Yeah, I wasn't expecting Trey's side to settle. This is a good deal for everyone.

BI and CJ are not similar, at all.

I’m not saying we are keeping BI, or that we should resign him now.
Just that this Trey signing has no bearing on BI.
This was an obvious extension. Simple as that.

We are playing the next two months to figure out what we are going to do with BI and CJ.

You did, unless I don’t know how to read, which is a realistic possibility.

I didn't mention CJ...

I was very obviously referring to BI and Trey.

And im not great at reading comprehension at times.

My bad.

And BI and Trey are nothing alike offensively. They are both tall and decent defenders. That’s the only similarity.

The extension has a bearing on BI in the sense that the FO made a decision to part with BI in favor of Trey under the assumption that BI would cost more than $40M AAV and Trey would cost less than $30M AAV.

That calculation may have changed if BI dropped his ask considerably or Trey's agent pushed him to chase a 25% max in RFA. However, with Trey extended, we now have 2 starting wings locked in through 26-27 for less than 25% of the cap to play alongside Zion and Dejounte.

With Zion as the #1 and Murray in the fold, a $40M+ AAV BI extension makes no sense from a roster construction and salary cap perspective, which is why we tried to trade him this summer and why we will look to move him before the trade deadline or in a S&T this summer.

I'm about to start the Myles Turner hype train again. Last year of his extension.

Is 28-29 this year.

Shoots a career 35.4% from 3, last 2 years averaged 36.5%

Played 139 games the past 2 years (out of 164)

Still a solid defender. Meh rebounder though

That has not happened at all.
Trey was always getting extended b/c it’s the smart thing to do whether they keep him or not, not that we have plans on not keeping him.

They haven’t all of a sudden decided to not keep BI now just b/c of Treys extension.

What is clear is BI and/or CJ won’t be on this team next year, and that’s been clear since July.

Going rate seems to be about $30 million per based on Claxton and Jarrett Allen. I would suspect even with Turner’s play questioned at time, he is still in that range. Pacers have a bit of a financial crunch coming so will be curious how that all plays out.

And you can argue getting rid of a guy who can get his own shot off and not replacing that skill set makes no sense from a roster construcion perspective.

BI and CJ are set to make $70Mish next year.

We are at $116M for next year with 7 players, not including CJ.
Zion
Murray
Trey
Herb
Jose
Hawkins
Missi

The tax line is goign to be almost $190M. That leaves around $70M to fill out the roster.
You can either move forward with CJ and go get a real center and a bunch of minimums and a draft pick.
Or you can go with BI and a cheap center and a bunch of minimums and a draft pick.

We need to see what we look like to start the season.
If BI, AND THE TEAM, play better with Murray as the PG, and the other big one being that Hawkins steps his game up, then CJ is going to be on the move b/c Hawkins replaces him for cheap.
If BI does'nt work well, which likely means small ball doesn't work well, then the solution is simple....you move BI for the best 5 that fits this team. And yes i can expect scenario 2 to be what happens. I dont' think small ball is going to work, but i'm still anxious to see it with Murray/Herb/BI/Trey/Zion. I do'nt think Zion, or the coaches, are going to do what's necessary to make it work, which means Zion needs to defend the bigger 5's using his body. They aren't going to make him take that punishment, and i don't blame them, but that's the only way it works. BI/Trey/Herb cannot defend the typical 5, and Zion doesn't run the floor enough to make them pay for it on the other end.

Give me a real center and one other bench guy with some minimums. I’m done watching us try to fit a round peg in a square hole with the Zion/BI fit. 3-4 months this season is going to do nothing to change that.
