Another random guy

I think some of these guys are just piggybacking off of what they read on twitter. No way a reporter from Texas with 5,000 followers has enough inside knowledge to know first hand. Curious as to why no one with any credibility has reported on the Pelicans coaching search. Is it just not newsworthy?

I THINK this is the same guy that said the Pels were a preferred destination of Beal during the season.

It's probably because nobody is really getting any information at all. The organization is very tight lipped and things rarely leak. People may just be trying to connect dots "Well Ingram and Trajan went to the Suns game, so it had to be to interview Willie, and if he wasn't the favorite Ingram wouldn't go, so he has to be the favorite"

I like the fact that source is capitalized and accentuated with an exclamation point. I’m convinced.

New Will Guillory article in The Athletic explores a possible Fred Vinson promotion to head coach:

LINK

Key bits for those without a subscription:

quote:

Why it makes sense

Vinson is the man who pulled off what many thought would never happen: he fixed Lonzo Ball’s ugly jumper and turned him into the most productive 3-point shooter in New Orleans the past two seasons. He converted Ingram into a high-volume 3-point shooter who makes those shots at an efficient rate. Vinson has already proven he’s one of the best in the league at getting players to understand their weaknesses and giving them the tools to fix the problem.

But when you speak to Ingram or Ball about the work they’ve done with Vinson, they always say it’s much deeper than the drills they go through or the instructions he gives out. They have fun working with him. Before the pandemic, Ball and Ingram met with the Pels’ shooting guru twice a day to work on their shooting. You don’t do that unless you really enjoy being around a coach. Vinson knows how to push players without seeming like he’s too negative or demanding.

The best coaches are the ones who know how to work with players rather than being the guy barking orders from the sideline. Vinson understands how to collaborate with the stars in New Orleans and how to get down to their level.

As someone who’s been in New Orleans for more than a decade, he gets how much the city is starving for a winner. He knows what it looked like when fans were completely behind this team during that wild 2018 playoff run.

It felt like the Van Gundy hire was all about getting a coach who focused more on the Xs and Os side of things and how to put the Pelicans stars in the proper position. This next hire should probably be more about building relationships and earning trust from the players, the front office, ownership and the fanbase. Vinson has years of experience in New Orleans that have given him a leg up on checking all those boxes.

quote:

Biggest questions

- Is Vinson ready to take on the responsibilities that come with being a head coach in this kind of pressure-packed situation?
- Is he the right kind of coach to push Zion and Ingram to be more committed on the defensive end consistently?
- Does Vinson have a strong enough personality to make up for the lack of leadership that’s hurt this team the past few seasons?
- Is he more effective working with players in 1-on-1 situations, or can he be just as good teaching a group?
- If Zion, Ingram and Ball will remain the core in New Orleans, wouldn’t they be better off with Vinson keeping his current role as shooting coach?
- How will he handle the pressure if things start heading in the wrong direction early in the season?
- Is he going to be creative enough offensively to get the most out of Zion?

I don't think Vinson has to play that role. He already has their trust, he can keep it high level. Let Weatherpoon be the bad cop/ugly truth teller. She seems well suited for that role. That was one of the top positive credentials on Monty's resume as an assistant when he was hired as head coach here. He got players on the Blazers to develop by being brutally honest with them.

If the team does it's due diligence and thinks Vinson's the best candidate I'm fine with it. They have a much better idea of his strengths and weaknesses and the kinds of coaches he needs on the staff to support him than they do with the other candidates.

I’d be a bit worried that by promoting Vinson to head coach, you then load him up with so many additional responsibilities, you take him away from what he is ultimately best at, “being a one on one skill development/shooting coach”. I’m sure he probably doesn’t want to be a shooting coach his entire life, but I would like to get at least one more season of him in that role with Zion, Hayes, Didi, etc.

Fletch tweet:

Some quick Pelicans updates before I watch the game:

-Ownership has unwavering support for David Griffin (and Trajan Langdon, Swin Cash).

-Willie Green and Charles Lee are sole focus of head coach search right now.

-Green and Pels are “very serious” about each other.

I’m starting to favor Willie Green more than Charles Lee. Don’t get me wrong I would take either one but Green is a bit more HC ready to me.

If Jason Kidd has taught us anything, you absolutely can still be incredibly effective at influencing the development of a player’s shot as head coach lol

If the top 2 candidates are in the Finals does that mean we don't get a coach announcement until after?

Looking like that could be the case.

I highly doubt Vinson is getting a demotion from his current assistant position.

Mac on Twitter:

So....this will NOT be a David Griffin pick (re: Head Coach). This will be a consensus pick, I was just told. Multiple people in the organization all have to agree and sign off. Not like last time where Griff made his choice and got standard sign off approval from ownership.

I’m really glad that Mickey Loomis gets a say in our next coach

Loomis has nothing to do with the Pelicans anymore, good try at a smart-arse comment though.

Mac doesn’t hear shite from shite.

Ain’t no one in that organization giving insider tip offs to the disgruntled ex-blogger and Twitter harasser that spends 98% of his time online trashing the very people he would need to be fostering relationships with to get said insider info.

I'd bet anything that Griffin wanted this to be a consensus decision.

1) He probably doesn't trust himself after the failure of the SVG hire.
2) If he were to make the next hire by himself and it failed, he'd absolutely get fired right away and he knows it. This spreads out the responsibility.

He pretty much insinuated it would be a more group effort this time and that he was bad at hiring coaches.

I don’t think Mac has any sources with the Pels close enough to know things. I think he may have some sources with other teams but not the Pels.
