Thoughts on Jarred Vanderbilt?

I've only seen Vanderbilt when he's played the Pels but from what I remember he was always a pain in the arse. One of those blue collar bigs that always seem to out work us. Looking at the splits bears that out, career per 36 of about 11/12, per 36 vs. Pels 15.6/13.
Looking at his stats he's a strong rebounder. If you use the NBA tracking stats his rim protection differential vs. expected is -3.2% which would be way better than any of our bigs who all have positive differentials (positive is not good in this case). LINK
He's only 6'9, so I'm not saying he's THE answer, but I think he gets us closer to having an answer with our center by committee. He also fits the culture with being a high energy hustle guy.
One con is he has a pretty bad injury history in the past, but he's been relatively healthy the last 2.5 seasons.
Is he someone you would give up a protected 1st or Naji for?
If we did trade for him who's minutes is he getting? I would guess a combination of JV/Larry, and he lets you trade Billy without needing to get a big back in return.

I'm a fan
If we get him, we should probably try to move Jval as I dont think those 2 plus Nance have enough minutes, certainly not in a playoff rotation.
In b4 playoffs? PLAYOFFS?

I've always really liked what he brings, but I wouldn't move Naji for him, and I'm not entirely sure about the first rounder either. Probably a heavily protected first.
I do think he helps in some areas, but he also just further highlights some other problem areas the roster already has.

If you have JV/Nance/Vanderbilt who of that trio is okay with getting DNPs?

I like him a lot. Can't Nance just play more PF in this scenario?

Agreed. I kinda like the combo of Vanderbilt and Nance at the 5, very versatile, should be switchable defensively. I would be a bit concerned about Vanderbilt being bullied in the post a bit, but you aren't going to find a flawless player at the 5, especially one that isn't making max level money.

quote:IMO, the reason to bring in a big like Vanderbilt is to play center in situations where JV is unplayable. Sure, both Nance and Vanderbilt can play the 4, but that doesn't solve the issue at the 5, which is the whole reason to make this move.

If you're trading for Vanderbilt, it's not for him to play 13 minutes off of the bench behind Zion.

Well you're not trading for him if you think you're playing him at center. That's just not happening.

In this case do you move JV and keep Billy to be 80% of what JV brings? JV usually isn't in the finishing 5 for a reason and sometimes it feels like we'd be better off having him as our 6th man kind of switching roles with Larry.
Is Nance/Vanderbilt/Billy better than
JV/Nance/Noel(or some other 3rd big we trade for)
If we do trade JV, how does that end up impacting what we send out? Do you still move Graham/Hayes and now have $33 million in outgoing salary instead of 18?

That's an awful frontcourt. I agree we need to really upgrade our frontcourt moving forward. But we would be horrible with that rotation of bigs. :Vomit:

Listening to the Zach Lowe latest podcast now, and he's talking about how Beasley/Vanderbilt would really fit a need for us.

He plays more center for the Jazz, but Vanderbilt is crazy redundant with Larry, except even less of a shooter. No way it makes sense to pay to get a guy that is almost a clone of a guy we already have on the roster…particularly another guy that can’t provide spacing.

My friend posed this trade to get them

Yeah something like Graham + Jax + Picks for Beasley + Vanderbilt would be great for us. Basically upgrading the graham and jax spots

It would suck to deal with Danny Ainge though. He only trades if he's clearly winning the deal

He plays some small ball center against backups but he most plays PF. He doesn't play "more" center for the Jazz. They got Olynyk, Kessler, and even Markkanan rotating at center.

Gross 1000% NO…
Beasley is shooting under 40% overall and under 33% from 3pt in his last 10 and for the year his numbers are virtually the same as DG.
So we would be giving up Kira, Jax, Herb, DG, and a 1st for a guy that plays like DG and an undersized 5/Larry clone. There is a reason the system marked that trade as -8 wins for the Pels.
