Beasley is shooting under 40% overall and under 33% from 3pt in his last 10 and for the year his numbers are virtually the same as DG.

I feel like just a couple of weeks ago, Beasley's TS% was I believe over .560 and Graham very near .500 and now they're basically equal.

That's wild.

For those calling Vanderbilt a Larry clone, Vanderbilt's rebounding is much better. This season per 36 9 for Larry, 11.6 for Vanderbilt. I think it's probably a lot more like JV vs. Turner, same tier different strengths and weaknesses, but most of the time when it feels like Larry isn't enough at center, it's because of the rebounding.

He plays some small ball center against backups but he most plays PF. He doesn't play "more" center for the Jazz. They got Olynyk, Kessler, and even Markkanan rotating at center.

No he doesn’t…they have an inverted roster and play Markkanan at the 3, Olynyk at the 4, and Vando at the 5. The announcers talk about it all the time in their games and that’s how the Jazz list it. Kessler’s emergence has changed things a bit lately and pushed Vando to the backup 5 which is likely why he is available.

Where does one find rim protection stats?

I'd like to see Vanderbilt compared to JV/Nance.

I remember when we got Val there was a tweet that showed the last 5 seasons he was basically avg at rim protecting but for whatever reason he was also in the 95th percentile in attempts at the rim every season...basically meaning, dudes just never tested him/went at him at the rim. Thought that was interesting, but no idea how much that changed in his 2 seasons with the Pels, wish I knew how to find that type of data.

I'd prefer this go down.

Kessler/Achiuwa/Beasley/Raptors 23 2nd to Pels

DG/Hayes/Otto Porter/Pels 24 lottery protected 1st and another protected future 1st. (i say future first b/c the Jazz already have 3 this year and 3 in 2025)

Billy/Kira to Raptors

Kessler will take over for JV, and if you want to trade him in the offseason then do it and bring in a minimum backup 5.

CJ
BI
Dyson
Zion
Kessler

with these guys off the bench.
Jose
Beasley
Naji/Herb
Trey/Liddell
Nance/Precious
2nd round pick and another big body to round out the 15 roster spots.

That's $153M in salaries for next year, which would be comfortably under the tax, and we'd be better. Almost too much better as some good players won't get the playign time they want, although we'll always have injuries.

I've long been on the Vandy train.

I think a couple of 1sts for he and Beasley would be great for this team.

You're talking about offense which doesn't apply since we don't play 5 out like Utah. They're not putting him up against centers on defense for the most part. So he's not going to be a center for the Pelicans. It wouldn't make any sense.

I'd do that in a heartbeat but Utah ain't trading Kessler, no chance.

Just did a cursory search on the nba website, these are their defensive fg% at <6 ft from the rim (essentially rim protection stats). They give the actual % and the expected %.

Nance:

Actual-70.1%
Expected-65.6%

Jonas:

Actual-67.1%
Expected-66.1%

Vanderbilt:

Actual-61.5%
Expected-64.8%

That’s probably fair, but they are very very similar style players. Larry shoots a bit better and blocks more shots, Vando is a bit more active on the glass, but all those numbers (except maybe shot blocking because Vando rarely blocks shots) are within a std deviation from each other.

If we are picking off of the Jazz’s secondary guys for a fit on the Pels, I would much rather have a guy like Olynyk who provides high level shooting and some more frontcourt size even if he is older.

This is the NBA tracking for defense within <6ft, so basically rim protection. The DFG% is the actual field goal percent against the defender. They don't give a good explanation of the columns, but I believe the FG% is the expected average FG% for the location/player they're defending. The Diff% is the actual vs. the expected. LINK

Against Larry 70.1% of shots are made which is 4.6% above(in a bad way) the expected FG%
JV allows 67.1% for 1.1% above expected FG%
Vanderbilt allows 61.5% or 3.2% BELOW expected FG%.

I would also say there is some context missing from this stat because Lauri Markkanen has a -11% which is absurd. I would imagine he owes a lot of that to playing next to Kessler who has a -12.6%.

There might be some better stats out there from the paid services like cleaning the glass if anyone with those subs minds taking a look.

I'm not as big on rim protection as you guys. Larry's ability to switch is far more valuable, and I'm not sending out my best wing defender for peanuts back.

Larry looks hampered by injuries. He doesnt have the same bounce he had at the beginning of the year when he was dunking over everyone and protecting the rim. He needs a week or two of rest but right now we cant afford that

I still would like gafford. He looked great against us the other night. I think his contract is solid, 12, 13, 14 in the 3 years after this. With the cap going up that wont be a lot. He fouls too much but he's a good rebounder and blocks 1.3 shots in only 18 minutes/game

Still would have to move 1 of JVal or Nance to bring him in.

someone has to be able to slow down Jokic. Denver are the team of the West for the next few years. If you can't slow down Jokic, you aren't beating them.
Do you feel confident with Nance and Vanderbilt guarding Jokic in a 7 game series? Vanderbilt cannot defend him. He weighs 215lbs and Jokic would back him down slowly and do whatever he wants.

You can fly Dwight back from China for that if that’s the only issue. Unfortunately improving the center position is really hard to do within the constraints we have.
