The talent is there for this team to be a top 4 seed for years, but we still have a couple things to clean-up before we consistently compete with teams like the Lakers and Rockets.

First, and this hopefully comes with experience, is the dumb turnovers. We threw the ball in the stands and directly to an opposing player too many times to count last night. The biggest reason it seems is we love to jump and pass, and nothing good happens when you do that. If we cut that out and shave 3-4 turnovers off per game, that will go a long way.

Secondly, and most importantly, Alvin Gentry will hold this team back from achieving success. His coaching skills are deficient for an NBA coach, and he has had long enough to show that he isn't the guy. We had stretches where we go 4 or 5 possessions of no basket and take some bad shots, and he doesn't call a timeout, leading to a big hole we have to climb out of. His rotations are absolutely terrible. Jah playing at all is criminal, but the fact that Favors, who was having a terrible game was getting more action than Melli is insane.

Thirdly, and finally, we get very lazy on defense sometimes. They had some possession where the Lakers were getting to the rim like no one was on the court. We struggle with bigger teams, like the Nuggets and Lakers, getting offensive boards, and we will have to figure that out. Offensive boards plus high turnovers give the opponent a lot of extra possessions putting too much pressure on making sure we score on the offensive end.

Games like last night are frustrating because it shows how close we are to being very good, but for a few minor improvements.

They really are. I wish we could put these role players in a jar and teleport 2 years from now with a new coach

I’m afraid guys like JJ & Jrue & Hart are going to miss the true peak of Zion- BI- Ball.

Al has a 505-585 career head coaching record. That is an ENORMOUS sample size

Continuing to believe that he will defy all statistical odds and suddenly become a championship caliber coach at the age of 65 is the definition of insanity.

He is a proven failure. There's no nice way to put it. Every single day that he is still the head coach deserves scrutiny.

And I don't want To hear the horseshite about "well we're in a playoff run". Yeah, to what? Getting embarrassed in 4 or 5 games by AD and his dad? frick that. Rip the band-aid y'all. We need to get ahead of the coaching search this off-season. fricking fire him already

Unfortunately with this run and maybe making the playoffs Gentry will probably be back next season as the coach

Read through half your post, got to Uncle Al reasoning, and immediately hit the UV. It all comes back to him. The dumb turnovers, the bad stretches, etc...these are things that are literally the coaches job to clean up and rid a team of.

I agree we showed we're very close last night. We need clear vision from the FO to see past the "right now" feel good wave that AG is riding.

this season needs to end in a win-win at least. Either make the playoffs and get some postseason experience to start the Zion era or move on from Gentry if he can’t get us there. There has to be a number of hires that can win with this squad

“The dumb turnovers”

How is that on the coach lol. I don’t love Al, but that’s not in him. That’s 100% on the player.

Because how many times does Zo have to try to make some half court bounce pass between 3 guys only to have it picked off, or Jrue drive into the lane only to jump up and kick it out only to have it go into the stands before your COACH steps in and says cut it out. I mean that is literally the job of the coach.

It's not just Zo or Jrue either, BI did it a few times last night and Zion threw it straight to a Laker at least 2 times I can remember.

The turnovers are on the players, if the casual fan knows better than to leave your feet as a passer i know professional athletes should know better

These type of offenses usually comes with higher turnover rates as they generally take bigger risks in the passing game especially without ball dominant stoppers. I don’t see it changing anytime soon to be honest.

Gentry isn't the long term answer but this

quote:

We had stretches where we go 4 or 5 possessions of no basket and take some bad shots, and he doesn't call a timeout

is terrible. Many NBA teams go 4 or 5 possessions without a basket/taking bad shots without calling timeouts. This even happens multiple times in games!

quote:

His rotations are absolutely terrible

Rotations last night were wonky. The Lakers are so much bigger than just about every team and the Pels are particularly light in the frontcourt.

Lots of bitching in other threads about Holiday on James, but there's no one else to guard him. The Lakers size makes them tough and also very different than most teams in the league.

quote:

the fact that Favors, who was having a terrible game was getting more action than Melli is insane

Melli played 27 minutes, 3 more than Favors.

I do think it's worth wondering why Favors was playing more down the stretch of the game. Same time, Melli started the 4th and came out with 4:47 left for Zion. Favors came in for Zion with 6:46 left and closed the game.

My guess is they were really worried about the offensive rebounds and thought Favors would help more there than Melli's offense on the other end.

Just looking at what we need in the future if we consider Zo/BI/Zion to be roster locks:

Sharpshooter at SG that is at least a warm body on D.

Need a big 3&D 3/4, even if its a bench guy, that can at least give us a matchup versus the Lebrons/Kawhis etc of the world

Need a center that can put up some resistance to the Jokic's of the world and also hit 3s. That's a unicorn I know.

I’m pretty sure even Gentry crawls their asses about the turnovers. At some point, they’re professional basketball players who should know how to avoid stupid turnovers.

I've often wondered how many turnovers are a result of Zion/Jrue/BI going airborne toward the rim, drawing contact, expecting a whistle, and when they don't get it they make some dumb pass to nowhere or travel

I can remember at least 1 instance of this, so it's probably a trend

IMO, most of the turnovers come from running a rhythm offense with players who aren’t 100% familiar with each other yet. It’s not an offense that is ideal to run when you have so many new players.

My optimal lineup that isn't INSANELY unrealistic (but still obviously unrealistic) would be

Lonzo
Beal
Ingram
Zion
Turner
