On a late-season bus trip, Van Gundy was venting frustrations to an assistant after a loss. According to Van Gundy, someone who overheard the conversation reported back to Griffin that Van Gundy was so frustrated that he might not return. Also, leading up to the final weekend of the regular season, a meeting between Van Gundy and Griffin did not go well — with dozens of sources chatting about it after it happened.

Van Gundy was also unhappy for large portions of the season, exasperated over how much difficulty he was having getting the young core to buy into a commitment to defense. Van Gundy and his wife relocated to New Orleans from central Florida, where they lived full time after his job with the Detroit Pistons ended following the 2018 season. He was working as a TV analyst for TNT when the Pelicans hired him in October.

And of course, have to push Zion wants a different market.
quote:

During the training camp portion of the NBA’s season restart at Disney last season, Williamson was dealing with a minor leg injury, to the point where it had forced him out of portions of Pelicans practice. Shortly after that, he left the bubble for what both the team and player would only say was an “urgent family medical matter.” Neither the team nor family ever disclosed what the issue was. Two sources with knowledge of Zion’s absence said there was an issue, but questioned the urgency to leave the bubble, which kept him away from the team for about a week.
The Pels made changes to their support staff to fit Williamson’s wishes over the offseason, and he returned in much better physical condition. But for most of this season, certain Williamson family members voiced displeasure with the organization. Among the targets of their criticism was Van Gundy, who they felt was too rigid and demanding as head coach, but also with the organization, which they claim did not live up to what they felt should be the standard for a star like Williamson. Numerous opposing league executives had heard the complaints, and they were confirmed by Pelicans officials.
When the Pels traded J.J. Redick to Dallas in March, it not only upset Redick but also is said to have irritated Williamson. Redick had asked to either be traded before the season or to stay in New Orleans all season for family reasons and proceeded to blast the organization and executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin on his podcast after the trade. Redick was a veteran with whom Williamson had grown comfortable in their two seasons together, and the dysfunction Redick accused the Pelicans of harboring is said to have stoked some of Williamson’s own feelings with regards to the direction of the franchise.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say none of that last portion was written by Guillory and was 100% Shams.

Man this is depressing, it is so hard to be a fan of an NBA team. Especially a small market. Feels like everything possible goes against you.

Also...this is blowing up everywhere. The vultures are circling on the Zion stuff. It is not going to be pretty and is only going to get louder and louder.

Apparently they also list Chauncey Billups as a potential replacement.

I think Shamit is right that both sides are putting out their preferred narrative, and that the truth is somewhere in the middle.

I really think that the pandemic bears a lot of the blame. SVG didn't have time to get to know his players. There was only a very brief camp, where the team did not have the opportunity to work on offense at all. The team couldn't bond, because there were no team dinners or other group activities. Etc.

A team with a bunch of vets could've handled that, because they already understand what the NBA is about. True veteran leadership would have held things together and given Stan's "tough love" approach time to work.

It just sucks. I think that SVG bears a lot of the blame, and I think that David Griffin bears a lot of the blame, and I think that Zion and BI and the rest of the players bear a lot of the blame. But it sucks.

I think this is just needed pressure on the organization. Last year Trae Young came out and said if ATL doesn’t get it together, he doesn’t want to play with them anymore. Now they are up 3-2 in the conference semifinals. The Suns knew it was getting to that point with Booker, they go out and sign CP3 and they are in the conference finals now. Pelicans need to get it right. Other than that year we swept Portland, we’ve been terrible. You can’t expect stars to take that. Im glad this has came out now we’ll finally work with some sense of urgency.

I’m actually surprised a lot of the early Twitter reaction is negative towards Zion about this

Wait we’re still with the JJ bullshite? He was terrible in his time last year and we got actually usable assets in return for him. What are we doing here?

Pelican star players should have had the balls to hold JJ Redick accountable for the shite season he gave us. He nearly single handedly cost us a run in the playoffs due to his ineptitude of commitment to the team and his single fricking craft of making the 3 ball. He should have been kicked in his liberal fricking white nut sack instead of being praised and worshipped by players on the team for thinking he was something that he wasn't. frick JJ Redick.

There's a reason why these dumb articles come out after firing a coach. Where were they prior to him being fired? I don't doubt that there's tension surrounding the organization and the players but I bet they're written with a lot of bad infomation.
