T'Athletic writeup on Kira Lewis
Posted by SlowFlowPro

Behind a paywall but will quote some of it
Vecenie comps him to Mike Conley, which I can see.
quote:
Coach Two: “I love Kira. Ridiculous speed. He’s a much better shooter than what he gets credit for. Now, they shoot a ridiculous amount of 3s, but he’s a better shooter. And he’s tough because he can make open shots, but he’s a mother fricker getting to the rim. End-to-end speed is ridiculous. Superfast.
quote:
Let’s start on the production side. Lewis averaged 18.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 5.2 assists on a 56.0 true-shooting percentage, and did so while playing his entire sophomore season at 18 years old. Given that he’s younger than most freshmen in this class having just turned 19 in March, it’s worth noting that the only freshmen in the last 28 years to post numbers hitting at least those thresholds are Dennis Smith Jr. and D’Angelo Russell. Both Smith and Russell went in the top 10. Other comparable high-major point guards to put up numbers nearing what Lewis did this year in terms of production and efficiency include Markelle Fultz (who went No. 1), Chauncey Billups (who was a top-five pick), John Wall (No. 1), Brandon Knight (top-10 pick), Marcus Smart (top-10 pick), and Jason Kidd (No. 2 overall).
The only high-major underclass point guards to put up at least 16 points, four rebounds and four assists per game on national-average efficiency to not go in the top 10 were Troy Bell (who went 16th), Malcolm Delaney (undrafted), and Nick Calathes (45th overall). Calathes and Delaney were a full year older than Lewis at the time of their breakouts, and went on to have elite careers overseas (with cups of coffee in the NBA). Bell suffered multiple knee injuries that essentially ended his NBA career by his second season. A lot of the guys above have either morphed into all-stars (Billups, Kidd, Russell, Wall), or had the trajectory of their carer tangibly altered by injury (Bell, Fultz, Knight). Really, Smith is the only player that looks like a bust. Lewis’ production is about as elite as you’ll find from someone his age against a high competition level.
quote:
Having said that, a big reason I like Lewis is the versatility with which he can play within scheme. Because he’s a good pull-up shooter out of ball-screens, scorer, and passer, you can play him on ball. His speed in transition will make you want to quickly outlet the ball to him as well in order to try to get early offense. But the thing with Lewis is that he can also work well with others. If you’re a team with a big initiator, like Milwaukee with Giannis Antetokounmpo or Dallas with Luka Doncic, he’s a good fit. You could even play him in Phoenix with Devin Booker well. The reason this works is that Lewis is a terrific shooter off the catch. He hit about one 3 per game this year off the catch, making those shots at a 61.9 effective field goal percentage. The ability to be effective as a part of an offense without the ball in your hands is enormous in this day and age, where the best players in the league tend to be big wings who can get their own shot and run 50 pick-and-rolls per game themselves. Lewis has that skill to play as both a primary lead, and a secondary guy.
Vecenie comps him to Mike Conley, which I can see.

Thanks for sharing. Exciting player with a high ceiling
i wont pretend to know anything about anyone drafted yesterday, i did not watch a single minute of CBB this year. lewis appears to be very well regarded by the analysts as an NBA talent and thats all you can really hope for outside the top 10 especially in a weird draft like this

yeah in a week draft and drafting that late, getting a guy with one clear positive (speed in this case) is really good
having the potential to develop even more is very good
it may never happen, but it's the NBA draft, not math

I honestly didn't expect any kind of impact with the 13th pick in a weak draft, but damn am I get excited reading about this kid

He also fills a huge need of being a dribble penetrator. Since Chris Paul left they've lacked a key ingredient needed to run a good half court offense, penetration. The Pels had about 1 season of Tyreke at point and half a season or so of Ish Smith and that's it. I don't remember any other players that could crack the paint on their own in the half court between Chris Paul and now.
The Pels became a running team in part because they had to since they were so bad at half court creation. Kira should hopefully fix that. You keep some transition offense because you're still good at it, but now you have someone to run a decent half court offense if his college effectiveness at the P&R translates to the NBA.

His only real flaw is he's super lithe. And you don't expect him to be able to pack much muscle on his frame. But finishing in the paint is as much about willpower and technique as raw strength. Allen Iverson was much smaller than Lewis and he finished in the paint as well as anyone I've ever seen.

quote:Weak drafts are relative. Even Anthony Edwards isn't a can't miss elite player like Zion or Mobley next year. There's plenty of dudes that are gonna come in the league and play for a long time in this draft.

They'll just bounce from team to team for a while.

He’s at 180. That’s basically Morant.

Seems like a Noris Cole type floor and a high ceiling. Solid with 13th pick
quote:
I did not realize how good he was in catch-and-shoot situations. 1.238 points per catch and shoot jump shot in the half court [89th percentile].
A rare and weird combination of being incredible in the open court, but also being able to hit jumpers in the half court.

Kira was the only PG besides Tyrese Haliburton to shoot over 45% from the field, 35%+ from three, and 80%+ from the line.

Younger and a much better shooter than Elf was at the same point.

He’s about as close to a plug in guy in a year with no offseason you’ll see at 13th overall due to the quickness and ability to get to the rim.

He didn’t shoot the ball a ton at Bama but he was a good shooter. It was honestly a little frustrating because he was so efficient from 3 but didn’t shoot as many as our other guys. He got to the rim at will, especially in transition. There were times when we were in desperation mode late and he just kind of took over. Again, a little frustrating because it’s like man you could’ve been doing that all game. He doesn’t have quite the athletic profile that Sexton did, but I do think he’s faster with the basketball. His speed kind of overwhelms defenders and is something you can’t simulate, similar to guys in football that just outrun angles, he is past guys on the court before they can get their hips turned and comfortable going left or right. Good on ball defender. He was a really good player for us and had multiple games where he played 35-40 minutes. Doesn’t get tired or hurt
