I believe Vinson did start having some more responsibilities this season, but he's largely been pigeonholed in player development his entire career. There's no way he'd get legit consideration for head coach.
This is probably the case. Its messed up though.

Guys who actually put in time with players, literally make guys better, get overlooked for guys who sound good on tv or sit next to the HC long enough.

Its something David Fizdale mentioned. It took a personal call from Pat Riley for him to even get a HC interview, because has was always looked at as just a player development guy.

From TrueHoop:

quote:
TrueHoop sources speculate the next choice might be a former NBA player, supported by assistants steeped in the European style. One name to keep an eye on: Nick Nurse’s assistant coach Adrian Griffin. David once spent a week with Griffin when the latter was a top high school prospect and the two of them were at the Five-Star Basketball Camp. David says that even at 17 years old, it was clear he was a “very special person.” He's long been considered "ready" to take over a team

Adrian Griffin was on Russillo's pod a couple of weeks ago if you all want to give it a listen.

Russillo Pod with Griffin

Reddick also pushed for SVG to be hired, so it may have been more of a "frick you we hired the guy you wanted now you want to leave?" type of move

Isn’t this how we all talked ourselves into Stan? “Hey guys did y’all hear how he was talking about the Pels with Zach Lowe?”

I don't think so. If you look at most of Griff's missteps, optimism bias seems like a key contributor most of the time. He really thought this team would be better than it was and JJ would be happy he stayed.

Griff made it seem like the Weatherspoon rumors were all a creation of social media suggesting Vinson is too

Its hilarious how all of the pelicans media/podcast guys immediately jumped on the Weatherspoon hire saying it was the right hire and acting like they knew she was the frontrunner. I dont get why some of these guys cant just wait a few hours to write articles on why someone would be the best fit when you dont even really know if they are even legitimately under consideration.

Christian Clark immediately came out with an article talking about why she is the most deserving. MM did his typical crap and said he'd be shocked if it wasnt her or Lee.

The same can be said with Hernangomez and Gabriel as well.

Billy is a 3rd big at best.

Garbiel at best is a 4th big.

They aren't guys you are going to rely on for big minutes during the season.

Or more of if you don't have a clue about the guy this is at least a nugget of info to help form your own opinion.

You know I really wouldn’t mind Fred Vinson being the HC. He’s well liked with the players and if we get a nice old coach as the lead assistant that would be pretty solid.

No one said for big minutes. They could have been useful when SVG was running 7 man rotations for the first half of the year.

Steven Adams' cap hit drops from $29m to $17m this year? am I reading that right?

That's because he signed a new contract. His old deal expired at the end of last season.

Honestly if we are hiring guys based off what JJ Reddick says...everyone needs to go

That would be the most stupidly petty decision I may have ever heard in basketball if that was actually the case

I’m sure it’s in here somewhere but I missed this one from Woj:

quote:

Sources: Pelicans assistant Fred Vinson will get serious consideration for franchise's head coaching job. Since 2010, Vinson's worked under Monty Williams, Alvin Gentry and Stan Van Gundy, building a strong body of work within organization.

I love Vinson, have literally argued there is no price too high for a guy that can actually, demonstrably improve a players shot.

That said, as head coach he would be doing none of that.

Frankly I’d condition that whoever we hire makes Vinson lead assistant. I don’t care if he’s qualified, but as long as you can keep him around to work on jumpers a little longer, whatever it takes

I feel like if Vinson wasn't already on the staff, people would be talking about him as a favorite candidate.

If he'd done with another franchise what he's done here, we'd all be dazzled by him and how players talk about him. He's too familiar, though.

Vanterpool or Lee don't have any more on their resume than Vinson, they're just more unknown.

I'm more worried about Vinson moving from focusing full time on improving shooters to overall game planning

Has anyone said anything about Vinson other than he helped tremendously with their shots? That doesn’t mean he can coach a whole team. Between the Vinson hype and Weatherspoon hype (especially on Reddit and Twitter), I feel like I’m losing my mind.

I don’t think either will be hired, I just think fans are fricking stupid
