Everything you need to know about seeding:

quote:

2020 NBA Bubble Format

The 22 teams will play eight regular-season "seeding" games.

A possible best-of-three play-in series for the final seed in each conference would be held if the ninth seed finishes the regular season within four games of the eighth seed.

The eighth seed would start with a de facto 1–0 lead, meaning that it would need just one win to advance, while the ninth seed would need two.

The NBA's regular playoff format would then proceed as normal. Playoffs are scheduled to begin on August 17

quote:

How many total games will each team in the 22-team field have played before the playoffs begin?
It varies by team, but most of the 22 teams will play 72 or 73 games after the eight "seeding games" are added to their regular-season game total. The Dallas Mavericks will have played the most total games (75) and the San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers will have played the least (71).

How will playoff seeding work?
The seven teams in each conference with the best records (regular-season games + seeding games) will have clinched a playoff spot. The usual tie-breaker scenarios will be in place for those seeds. The eighth seed could potentially come down to a play-in tournament.

How will the play-in tournament work?
If the team with the eighth-best record in its conference is more than four games ahead of the team with the ninth-best record in the same conference, no play-in tournament will be necessary. The final playoff berth will simply go to the team with the eighth best record (regular-season games + seeding games).

But if the team with the eighth-best record in its conference is four games or fewer ahead of the team with the ninth-best record in the same conference, then we'll have a battle for the final spot between those two teams.

The tournament will basically be a best-of-two series -- where the No. 9 seed will have to win two head-to-head matchups to take over the No. 8 spot.

We are going to play Memphis in the play in games and we will only have to beat them once.

Whether the Pelicans manage to end the season in 8th or 9th, we'll be playing in the "play-in tournament" since its virtually impossible for us to finish 4 games ahead of the Grizzlies at this point with only 8 games left.

Ill second that prediction. I dont know what kind of form the Grizz are in but thats a pretty brutal schedule they have. I could see us ending the season half a game ahead of them.

Who to route for out of Memphis or Portland in their opening game? I say Memphis because we play them and can take a game Directly from them.

I'd root for Memphis.

I think both Portland and the pels are better than Memphis so root for whatever gives us the best chance of playing the grizz in the play in

Sure, I can see us definitely cutting into their lead but the math that needs to happen for us to pass them is tough.

pels will play one less game than memphis, so this number is effectively 4 games back

Why does that matter? If we go 6-2 and they go 2-6 for instance then our 34-38 beats out their 34-39 overall record for the 8th seed

And I'd put the odds of that happening at something like 25%. I think that 6-2 is likely for us, but I think that Memphis will likely win three games.

Pels 7-1 (yeah I said it)

Blazers start out 1-3, Dame and CJ decide to opt out the rest of the games.

Memphis goes 3-5.

Pels jump Memphis for the 8th seed and win the 1 game against them, proceed to take the Lakers to 6 games.

Tell Ja and Grizz to prepare their foreheads. Zion and Co. nuts will be arriving shortly.

At what point do we remember that Alvin Gentry is our Head Coach?

But what are our 538 odds? Do we need to bring back the tracker thread?

I don’t think this is crazy. The Grizz have a crazy tough schedule. I could see them going 1-7. IMO, they are only going to be favored in one of their games.

ETA: Pelicans should be favored in 7 of their games (could be 6, but they have us favored over the Jazz in game 1).

ETA2: Portland should be favored in 2 (maybe 3) of theirs.

I'm really curious about the foot inflammation that kept Dame out of their last scrimmage. That has the potential to cause him more problems.
