Realistically, how do we win a series vs GSW?

Let's be real, most of us think we CAN beat the Warriors in a series but most of us don't think we actually will. And while it is probably true (GSW when healthy is historically good), the way we are playing right now we should be able to hang very tough.

Portland was the perfect matchup for us. GSW obviously is not.

So how do we do it? I'm talking outside of the typical "Curry stays hurt" responses. Let's talk what this team needs to do to win this series.

Matchups, schematics, intangibles. What needs to happen?

Some thoughts:

1) Force them off the 3 point line: Make them shoot as many midrange and take it to the rim shots as possible

2) Attack the Rim/Defend the Rim: We need to win this series with Davis and Jrue owning the rim. Davis has to defend it when we force them off the 3 point line, and we need to take them off the dribble and own the interior on offense

3) Supporting cast draining 3s: Rondo, Miller, Mirotic, Moore will have open looks as Davis and Jrue get a ton of attention. They have to make their shots or we have no chance whatsoever.

4) Out hustle: We have to be the hungry team, the team that gets the loose balls, the team that gets back on defense, that gets chippy, that punches them back every time they go on a run

Obviously, none of this is stuff that is a shock, and is much easier said than done.

What do you think needs to happen (besides "scoring more points than them) to pull off the win?

Diallo, okafor need to be somewhat active and physical and help to get Green/ McGee/ bell in foul trouble.
Moore Clark and solo need to shoot well enough to keep defense honest or take advantage of double teams on big men

This is what impressed me the most against POR. Everytime POR went on a run and cut the lead down to a couple points, the Pelicans would go down the court and answer. During the first two games I kept waiting for the inevitable collapse at the end of the games, but they held on and answered each time.

We HAVE to limit second chances and get more of our own. We got very lucky with Portland because they beat the shite out of us on the offensive glass. To win this series we HAVE to win that battle.

And send a goon after Donkey's bitch arse. Get him frustrated.

Come home with a win. Let the blender take over.

Score more points than them in 4 games.

My biggest fear is Zaza being a dirty player around AD

As always, one of the major keys to us winning is limiting our turnovers.

Defensive key will be to make them play iso ball as much as possible. I know it sounds crazy, but the more Durant iso plays we have, i think the better chance we have to defeat them. Even if Durant score 40, taking 28 shots, i think that's better than their offense clicking and everyone for them is scoring b/c they are getting open shots and open lanes.

In the 3 wins vs the spurs, Durant took less than 20 shots in each game, 17, 19 and 17. In the one loss, he took 28 shots. Warriors had 19 assists in the loss, 26, 32 and 32 in the wins.
In the last game we beat them, he scored 41 on 26 shots. We had 39 assists, they had 31.

Pretty simple keys to victory at face value i think. Don't turn the ball over, and make Durant play iso ball. Now coming up with a scheme to be implemented in game to achieve that, well that's what Coach Gentry and his staff is for.
I think we are going to switch a lot more picks against the Warriors, where as we did pretty much everything we could to not switch picks against the Blazers. If you try to let Draymond and Iggy and Livingston beat you, they probably will. Can't go double teaming Klay and Durant off picks like you did to Lillard and McCollum.

And one last key, DO NOT let Draymond Green get to AD. He will without a doubt do everything he can to piss him off. He is going to be extremely aggressive with him. The role players need to make sure when he does crap like this, that they do it back to him. Take Draymond out of his game, don't let his antics affect AD, draw those antics to guys like Solo, Moore and Miller and even Rondo. Solo's goal for this series should be to get Draymond kicked out of at least 1 game.

I had a more detailed post in the other thread, but make them turn the ball over more than 15 times and only turn the ball over ourselves less than 10 times. Alos get to the line. We won last game at Oracle because of turnovers and free throws.

Win game 1.

Win games 3 and 4.

Win game 6.

Two role players (miller, clark, Moore) are going to have to go bonkers each game. Like 15+ points. We aren't going to stop them from scoring but we can outscore them.

AD>KD

If you want to be the best player in the league you gotta play better than one of the top two guys at some point.

Also pray that Klay smokes a new strain of some shite that fricks his shot up. If i'm Erman I am exclusively sticking Jrue on him the entire series and making Durant beat Davis/Hill/Moore platoon.

I think Jrue on klay is a waste of energy and Jrue's defensive advantages.
Klay isn't some great 1 on 1 player. You stop him with team defense. You have someone like Moore and Miller race around the court with him, and just make sure you are giving gaps for them to run through screens, and stepping out when needed. It doesn't matter who is guarding him, you just need to limit how often he catches the ball with space, and it takes good team defense to do that.

Jrue should be on Durant. If Durant wants to shoot over him all game, with Jrue in his face, then so be it. I don't think they can win playing that way, and they've proven they don't win when they play that way recently.

I would really like to see AD cover Durant and see how that transpires. I think he could shut him down 1 on 1.

This is one of my biggest fears, he plays like an arse at all times.

I'd let KD get his and focus on limiting the supporting cast. Put strong ball pressure on Draymond and Iguodala to limit them from disecting our defense finding the open guy with their off-the-ball action. Iggy's everything Portland wants Evan Turner to be, except 500x more effective. There's going to be a game when Iggy is hitting at a high percentage, but I think you have to try to make him and Draymond beat you by forcing them to shoot, similar to how we vacated Turner, Aminu, etc.

GS really doesn't have a lot of shooters. Klay and KD obviously. Iggy and Dray can, but not at a consistently high percentage. Swaggy P doesn't really get a ton of minutes.

I'm worried about how we defend KD setting the screen on Rondo, and that Klay is much better equipped to defend Jrue than CJ or Dame.

No player in the NBA is shutting Kevin Durant down 1 on 1. He needs to be doubled on the perimeter, get the ball out of his hands

KD and AD will get theirs.

Gotta attack the glass and prevent Klay from going super-nova. You can live with Draymond+bench getting hot like Portland's group did. It'll be tight wins, but a win is a win.

You let Klay go off and its an automatic loss.

Second chance points weren’t that much of an issue. It was just a biproduct of the traps we ran on Lillard and C.J.

It’s going to be interesting to see what defensive scheme Darren Erman cooks up this series. Not sure who he puts on KD.

This is the key factor. You have to assume that AD and Jrue being at their best is a given to even entertain a discussion, but at the very least a minimum of 2 of Niko, E’, Ian, and Miller have to be smoking hot from the arc - and probably 3 of them.

Id alternate between harassing harassing Klay and KD, focusing more on whoever is struggling more (to keep him out of rhythm) and letting the other score. Some nights Klay will go off, other nights it'll he KD, but it's impossible to predict who until in game. Be flexible so if one is *not* shooting well you limit GSW to one reliable option. If both shoot well it's an uphill climb.

Also, obviously, win the turnover battle. This is usually a problem for us but the Warriors are worse than us. If we can win the turnover battle something like 16-11 and pick up five extra possessions, that could be huge.

That's my point. We got away with it. We don't get away with it against GSW.
